  • Reversing Camera 90 Series

    Hi All,

Last weekend I fitted a reversing camera to my 90 Series Prado and I thought I would share some images.
I got the screen and camera from Jaycar the screen was $100 and the camera was $150
I chose this screen because it has no on\off button the the screen comes on when power is applied to it, also it folds down when you want it to be hidden.
The camera and screen are both hard wired to the back on the cig lighter and then to a switch on the console. So if the switch is on then they both turn on with the accessories power, off is always off.
The spare wheel can still be taken off without having to remove the camera. Also the spare wheel lock will prevent the camera from being stolen.
I did have to put some spacers (washers) on before I put the wheel back on to allow for the wires to fit behind the wheel.
I didnt have to drill and holes to fit the camera, just used the existing holes.

Here you can see the difference between the rear vision mirror and the camera.

I could'nt fit any more cables through the existing condute

        Trent,

Nice work mate, I like it!

I wonder if it would be possible to put a 3 way toggle switch in and have a camera at the front too ... like a winch cam. Could provide some good travel footage too.

          Hi RogueAssie,

The screen actually has 2 AV inputs, AV1 will show on the screen untill a signal is picked up on AV2 then AV2 will be shown.
The idea behind that is you would have the camera on AV2 powered by the reversing light and AV1 could be a DVD (but the screen is a bit small for a DVD).
But in your idea you could just have a toggle switch to turn the AV2 camera on and off.

          Cheers.

You don't have to install 3 way toggle switch.

it is very easy to get both cameras (front and rear) working at the same time.

            1. buy the 10.2" screen LCD that can run 3 cameras at the same time -> on Ebay with around $120 shipped.

            2. buy 2 IR cameras from Ebay with about $50 shipped.

            3. buy one switch (normal 2 way switch) ~$8.

            4. Install the rear camera to the reversed light with a diode to allow the + from reversed light to this one only.

            5. Install the front camera.

            6. attach two of those one to the switch, connect the switch to +12V

            So, you have two options.

            1. Got the rear one works independently when you go backward.

            2. Got both of them work at the same time with a switch, you can see both of the camera on the screen, even if you go forward or backward.

            Done job.

              Re: Reversing Camera 90 Series

I think you missed the point of the 3-way toggle switch IR, UP to camera 1, DOWN to camera 2 and CENTRE is both cameras off. You may not want to have to engage reverse for the camera to work, hence the beauty of Trent's install. Switch activated gives the driver options.

Trent, thanks for the extra detail on the LCD screen. Something I will add to the "To Do" / "Wish" list.

I wonder what the best way would be to hook up some sort of HDD or compact recorder to the screen :P

I am currently installing a reversing camera and need to remove the rear view mirror to run / hide the cables in the liner. I have run the cable from the rear door through to the dash but I can't figure out how to take the mirror off and I can't seem to find any suggestions on the web.

Does anyone know how to take off the mirror?

                Thanks

                  Finished installing a reversing camera

I finished my reversing camera installation. Slightly different to Trent’s above using a camera that replaces one of the number plate lights so the cabling goes through the rear door handle assembly. The only tricky part is actually taking the rear door handle off.

The camera is this one off e-bay

                  http://cgi.ebay.com.au/ws/eBayISAPI....:X:RTQ:AU:1123

I installed a monitor that replaced the rear view mirror like this one from e-bay

                  http://cgi.ebay.com.au/ws/eBayISAPI....:X:AAQ:AU:1123

It worked exactly as described BUT the monitor always has to compete with the light in the mirror so on a sunny day it was impossible to see. I replaced it with the pop up unit Trent used which I bought from Jaycar.

It is very good, The camera has a three position switch on it. On – Off – Reverse Only.

I installed the camera for the safety aspect but have found that it is really handy for reverse parking.

I am planning on installing a front camera as well.

This installation was easy but very time consuming. At one stage I had 8 or 9 of the internal trims removed to draw the cable up to the dash. This is really easy as everything either just pops off or unscrews. When you are levering off the trim cover your screw driver with tape or cloth to prevent scratching the paint or plastic and just pop the panels out.

Oh, and I never figured out how to take out the mirror.

Thanks to everyone with the early posts - they made it very straight forward.
