  • Rear coils and shocks Prado KZJ95W

    I own a Prado (1KZ-TE)+(KZJ95W) 1997 model.

    I have recently replaced the rear coil springs with Toyota coil springs (part no: 48231-6A450) and fitted Tokico shockabsorbers. I did this as the rear was "bottoming" every time I went over a 3" to 4" road bumb. Unfortunately this did not help as the "bottoming" continued.

    I have shown the vehicle to the OME and King Springs dealers in Colombo and they say that the coils are too soft. On a test done by the Kings dealer, he showed me that the space between the rear bump stopper and the axel was only about 3/4" with a load of three person in the back seat with a full tank of diesel.

    OME coil springs/shockabsorbers are relatively more expensive than King coil springs (part no: KTRR-59)/Rancho shockabsorbers (RS5000).

    I shall be very grateful if I can receive expert views on which combination I should use. I have already spent quite a bit on Toyota/Tokico and I do now wish to make the wrong decision.

    Hi Ekendra. If you are travelling fully loaded most of the time, check out the dobi's. They do not sag but give a hard ride when empty. I find they are great when towing but would not fit them again as most of my work is with an empty vehicle. Cheers.

      If you like the soft ride, then you need a longer spring than the one from Toyota to stop the shock bottoming out.
      If you want a firmer ride, then you'll need a firmer spring and possibly a longer spring.
      It is best that you get a matched spring and shock so that you don't damage the shock and the combination is right for the load you are carrying.

        The issue in Sri Lanka is that the choices are rather limited when it comes to 4x4 off-road suspension parts! Its either King/Rancho or OME. King/Rancho products are usually available ex-stock while OME has to be pre-ordered with a 6 to 8 weeks delay. OME products are more expensive too, but that is not the criteria if I can get hold of the correct combination.

        I will use my vehicle most of the time on good roads with a load of about 30kgs in the back. Off-road trips will be about thrice a year into our national parks (with loads of around 40 to 50kgs + a tow bar) which have reasonably good dust roads. Some parks have sandy roads while some, during the rainy period can become very muddy and boggy!
