  • Sway bars on a lifted 95 - opinions sought

    Hi

    I have a 2" lift on my 95 but I find the high (blacktop) cornering rather disconcerting due to perceived body roll.
    Cars behind me cannot see any roll at all but I can feel it and don't like it.

    Some months ago, as part of a bigger service, I had Pedders change all the bushes etc which made no difference to the way it felt.
    Just wondering on other drivers opinions of this sway.
    Are there aftermarket upgrade anti-sway bars that will minimise this or should just live with it?

    drive slower ,,,, you could try some adjustable rear shocks ,turn them up to the stiff setting on road.

      Hah, unfortunately you have a lifted 4x4... try driving mine with it's body lift and 33's... then you'll love yours!

        I figured this would be the general consensus but thought someone might have found a way to tame the beast.
        Running 30's, thats enough for me.

          Hi Malcom

          Whiteline do have swaybars listed for the Prado in a Heavy Duty 27mm Front & 22mm Heavy Duty rear.

          -We have a Resident KZJ95R here at work that we have just lifted & it has 26mm Front Swaybarbar & 16mm Rear Swaybar standard.
          I know a 1mm step up on the front doesn't sound like much, but it is a 16% stiffer bar for the 1mm increase over the standard Front Swaybar.
          On the rear bar going from 16mm to 22mm is a stiffness increase of 257% The problem with the big rear bar is it will limit the flex.

                We have been looking at getting some stuff in from the States, but for us we have to be sure of quality & product support and back up from the supplier before we can retail it. I do like the look of the upper arms in yours.
                Superior engineering do some nice stuff, if you own a 120, but not for the 95's unfortunately.

                Will keep investigating & see what we can come up with. As for more flex than yours, i think a custom set of Driveshafts may be in order.

                  As Glen showed with his , you can gain a bit more wheel travel by disconnecting the swaybars altogether.
                  There are a few nice swaybar disconnect kits on the market for the Jeeps, but i am yet to see one for the Prado's.

                    Gotcha, hadn't considered off road wheel travel . I keep thinking its a car

                    What bushes do you guys recommend for the sway bar ties? I've just had some Nolethane ones disintegrate after 4 months so looking for alternatives.

                      Hi Malcom, we use Superpro bushes.
                      Part No's: SPF2755SK for the front & SPF2092B for the back.
                      They are a Blue Polyurethane bush & are self lubricating. They are a good thing.
                      We fitted them to our resident Prado 2 weeks ago when we did the lift.
                      I am trying to get all the pics together & post up a full write up on it soonish within the next week or so.

                          I have since replaced my sway bay links with 30mm extended ones, and it made a difference to cornering and stability.

                            What does 30mm extended mean, are the bars longer than normal?
                            Is that cornering/stability on the black top or dirt?

                              Yes the link pin is 30mm longer. The link pin is the part that connects to a bracket that comes off the chassis rail, and connects to the sway bar link (the flatter bit on the end of the sway bar with a hole in it).
                              97 VX Grande, with front & rear air lockers, ARB Sahara winch bar with tigers 11 winch, 2" EFS lift, 265/75/16 Achilles Desert hawk XMT, and more.
