Re: OME Suspension - What do you think

    Hi pjoia,

I have a 95 series, 1999, petrol V6 auto. I installed OME 891 front struts and OME 890 rear springs/shocks almost 2 years ago. I have no bull bar or extra weight on the front and minimal in the back wagon area, day to day. They have done 20,000km now on mainly road and when we go off road a mixture of medium rough, some hard and several trips to Stockton beach NSW (some of Australia's tallest sand dues on the coast). We load it up medium to heavy about 10 times/per year when we go for 2 days or more and do 4wd club runs every couple of months or so.

The front end is holding up well and has kept its clearance after inital settling in period. The rear is hopeless. The so called 'medium' duty springs (890) are designed for no extra constant load, but can't even sit up with a 50kg or so in the back. The rear has been sagging up to 45mm below the front end for at least 6 months now. If you choose to go OME then go the next one up to 891's. They will settle a bit but give you the clearance you need and be good when you go off road and carry a few kilos of basic gear. I assume they won't sag as quickly either.

I replaced my OME 890's yesterday to RidePro heavy duty springs and they do not rattle the car and are similar to the softer 890 ride, but are desigend to hold up to 300kg constant load. This surprised me as I expected a harsher ride - this has not occurred. They also sit 35mm higher than the 890's (this will drop a few mms upon settling) - they sit the same as the 890's did when new, so lets see what happens over time. I am very impressed and will not buy OME again as they are a mid level product, satisfactory, however, will do what you need them to do. In the future I will buy Bilstein shocks and RidePro springs or other springs such as King, Lovells or Koni.

In summary OME will do the job, but the 890's will sag in a short time. I'd go the 891's to start with. Its all a learning experience and don't be surpirsed if you change springs again, there is no exact formula for suspension.

    Enjoy
