Re: New tyres for my Prado - What to choose?

Hi Hutch. Aha! this is an option I was not offered when I had my AT's fitted. I think I'll check the LT's out when I replace my current set. The Goodyears I had were LT's but highway tread. Cheers.

Re: New tyres for my Prado - What to choose?

Well they are seriously chunky tyres compared to my old GrandTreks (let's face it though they were bald  ). I haven't done much driving on them yet but noise seems minimal and they handle well; they do seem to have a harder ride than my old GrandTreks though.

They have been nitrogen filled rather than using compressed air which supposedly better maintains stable tyre pressures. I'm not sure how well that works in practice but we'll see; might be an issue if I have to lower pressures for off-road driving (i.e. would have to refill with compressed air afterwards). I was advised to keep them at 38PSI for on-road driving and ~34PSI for off-road; I'm sure those pressures are higher than what the Prado's handbook states though.

I've just noticed they have mounted my tyres inside out, the raised white lettering (it's actually blue but I assume this is a protective coating) is on the inside edge. I don't know if this is a good or bad thing, the tyres don't seem to be a directional tread pattern so I guess it's just a looks thing. I didn't even realise they had white lettering till I looked at them just now.

There is no in or out side. It's whether you prefer the white lettering in or out.
If you specified white lettering on the outside and they out it on the inside, then you have grounds to complain. But if you didn't specify, then it would be a really nice tyre place if they offered to change it for you for free

Well I didn't know and they didn't offer. I suppose the white lettering is nice once it's new and then once it gets rubbed it will look like cr@p anyway? I shall ponder some more before deciding whether to kick up a stink.

Re: New tyres for my Prado - What to choose?

I forgot to ask for my raised lettering to be on the outside when I got the ATRs done on mine. But I was royalty there after having bought 5 tyres so they offered to flip the tyres for free.

I figured I didn't care enough about it to wait for another 2 hours.

If they'll do it for free, great but don't bother kicking up a stink. It's not worth it for the bling factor.

              Cheers,
              Declan.

                I bought 4, over $1100 worth.

 I think hubby cares about it more than me, he was all "OMG" about it when I showed him tonight. Does the white lettering rub off fairly quickly?

$1535 for my tyres

The white won't wear off but it won't stay white

It will be the colour of the most recent terrain you take them the through

It would help if I could see a pic with a 90 and outlined raised white lettering on the tyres; would make it easier to work out if it's worth the bother.

There's one on the Bridgestone site but it's only of the tyre :- http://www.bridgestone.com.au/tyres/treads/d694.aspx

Thanks Declan, not sure I like the bling effect. Just out of curiosity are those Bajas a non-standard size? They look kind of weird in relation to the wheel arches or is it just the lift?

Thanks Glen, your Prado is very similar to mine except I have the 2 tone panels (the panels are silver/champagne and door trims and flares are grey). With the refined colour scheme on my panels I was worried the white lettering on the tyres might look out of place. There's a pic here before we put the ARB bar on, still has the original GrandTreks on it too :-

Mate don't worry too much, if white lettering is an option on the tyres you're after, then go for it, they'll look good on silver.
Just don't go chasing specific tyre models purely for the purpose of white lettering.. it's not that special.

PS - I agree the tyre sizes look odd on that green Prado. I'm guessing it's 265/75 with no lift, or 285's with only 2" lift

I already have the tyres, they just fitted them with the lettering on the inside without asking me. I didn't think of it at the time as my old GrandTreks didn't have any white lettering.
