  • MT Maxxis or AT BF for my rig?

    Hi bros,

Im now in need of replacement whole set tyres on my rig.

    I will use for:
    - daily driving.
    - towing my caravan 1.5T (with electric brake) when on trip (about once/month)
    - off-road with bros in our forum (will be any time i can do after getting new tyres and winch)

Im wondering which one should be better for me:

    - Maxxis Buckshot MT-754 265/75/16 (8 ply)
    - Maxxis Bighorn MT-762 265/75/16 ( how many ply? )
    - AT BFG 265/75/16 (10 ply)

    Thanks for your advices.

How many km's do you usually drive during weekdays?
What kind of offroading will you be doing?

Buckshot vs Bighorn: Just by looking at the tread I reckon the Bighorn is better. It has sidewall lugs for improved mud traction and protection, and it has sipes which will allow longer lug life in the hard stuff. The Bighorns appear similar to Mickey Thompson MTZ's, but not quite as rugged as the MTZ's

Man those things are almost useless offroad!! They have one of the tightest AT treads available, almost HT IMO.

While I have no first hand experience with them, I have heard that the maxxis muddies aren't very good on road. Just to throw another one into the mix, I have a few mates who rave about Kumho KL71 muddies. They recon they are quieter and handle better on road than Mickey Thomson ATZ 4-rib (an all terrain tyre). While this is 2nd hand information at it's best, the KL71's may be worth investigating.

LOL: I just will join any of the off-road trip that our bros do (in the area of NSW first as im in Syd). I will see you soon.

@others: well, it seems hard options. I think I will go with BFG 265/75/16 10ply AT

Actually, last 2 months I got a whole set of 5 x BFG 285/75/16 AT 10ply brand new on my rig for just 1,000km. Then I found that the tyres make my rig feel older than it is. I see the real thing is that it is slower and costs more fuel. Although very appreciated the use of those tyres, I sold it in 2 days on Ebay for a mate in Syd.

I think now 32" BFG may be a better choice.

I believe MT's have been the strongest performers on all our our trips, unless beach driving is important to you.

Seems you've already made your decision, but you didn't say how many KM's on road you do per week.

So you mean that I should take a set of BFG MT instead of AT? Beach driving is not common with me, very small portion of my time.

Will MT be good when I tow my caravan?

Not final decision made yet. Normally I do about 20,000k/year includes all things. So daily driving it will be about ~300km/week. What is your suggestion now?

If you're really driving 500km on tar roads during week days, you may be better off with AT, better handling and should last longer than MT's. Also, with a carvan, AT's will be safer.

Have you considered the Mickey Thompson ATZ 4 rib? I haven't tried them, but they seem to be a pretty aggressive AT, so perhaps a good compromise. The sidewall lugs will definitely be beneficial offroad.

Thanks Glen_ep, I already asked the seller of MT ATZ-4 the quoted price of freight to my address for a set as I can not find out a guy selling this tyre in Syd. I see the tread of this tyre and quite interested.

How about BFG AT compare with MT ATZ-4 ? It seems you don't want to recommend BFG AT?

Actually I only done less than 300km/week, some times i have long trips to add up around 20,000k/year.

I don't have any first hand experience with the BFG AT or M.T. ATZ, so I'm not really qualified enough to compare them, or recommend them. The only notable difference I see is the M.T. ATZ's have better sidewall lugs.

no worry mate, thanks a lot for your time, if i can get a whole set of MT ATZ with good price, i will go for it. Otherwise, a new set of BFG AT 10 ply will be not a bad choice for me (hopefully).

                            Update:

I will go with MT ATZ 4rib after getting a good deal with the dealer from interstate. Will get it in Sydney next week for $1600 for 5 brand new ones included shipping. Should be more $150 for fitting and balance all of them.

Overall, $350/tyre included all things like that, im quite happy.
