  • will they fit without flares ?

i have a 1998 model Prado RV6 which has factory steel wheels fitted with 225/75 , i have been given an opportunity to get a set of 2000 Prado Kimberley factory alloy rims . just wondering if anyone has done this particular "change over" before ? and if so will the new rims with my tyres fit under the guards without the use of flares.
    Thank you.

      rims

some of the Kimberley factory alloy rims are only 6" wide, no real point in changing them. Any of the Prado rims should fit , the body is no different ,the guards are all the same, the GXL looks wider but the plastic guard is stuck on the outside of the body,The metal inner guards are all the same

The plastic flares do cover the wheels. They stick out more then just the metal guards. If they are 7 inch they will stick out from the sides on an RV with out flares which will then make you illegal. I may be wrong but I'm sure the gearing in the diff is different to that of the GXL and upwards etc. Not sure how you would find this out, .....Cheers Steve

Hi beerdog, Could be a possible typo in the Gregory's manual. The front and rear diffs are the same ratio.

The 3.4 V6 (not including the RV) has 4.300:1 front and rear.

4.100:1 is used by the RV which has smaller diameter tyres.

And to confuse you further, the Diesel 90's had 3.900:1

          Cheers,
          Declan.

would it change anything if i was to change the tyre size ? my Prado at present 16x6 inch rims with 225/75/16 tyres and the the Kimberely rims are 16x7 inch. i'm just reaching but the Kimberley look quite good and are at a reasonable price .Thanks again.

Go to this site and put in your data

                http://www.rimsntires.com/specs.jsp

225/75 16 16x6 rim with 30 offset and 265/70 16 16x7 rim with 15 offset. The tyres will protrude outside the guards but by how much I don't know. Based on this calculator the tyres will be 35mm wider / further out so you can check that on your current car. A lot of people ran GXL rims on early 120 GXs and the tyres were pretty much just outside the steel guards and quite a few ran with that without trouble.

The 265s are 34mm taller so check your manual with regards to diff ratios. This change isn't legal without an engineering certificate unless your tyre placard shows that tyre size as an option.

                    Hi

I have 265/75/16 on CSA Stampede rims 20 off set on my RV4. They don't stick out side the guards.

Would depend on offset. Genuine GXL, Grande rims etc not from an RV6 will stick out unless like yourself you get rims to suit with different offset or you have flares....Cheers Steve

Hi Wato, I previously owned an RV6 and fitted up the Toyota [ROH] Kimberly mag, which to these I fitted the 245x70x16 tyre which maintained the original 225x80x16 rolling diameter.I also fitted the 245 tyre to the old 6" rims to run on my camper and box and tool trailers,so was able to interchange wheels. The 245 fitted nicely under the guards and did not protrude, and ride was so much better than the 225 cheese cutter tyres.
I ended up fitting the Toyota RV flares more to do with the look of black flares matching the black bumper, handles and mirrors. The kimberly mag was produced for a limited run GXL model so were the same offset as the gxl steel rims.
I ended up fitting 265 tyres when iI replaced the rubber, and again these would fit without any over hang of the non flare guard but would be right at the edge of guard. You won't notice any performance issues [mine was an auto].
I now drive a poverty pack GX 120s and again have replaced the skinny rims with GXL rim and 265 tyre and again don't protrude beyond the guard. You do get a bit extra mud on the side of your car but we all love getting dirty..I did look at fitting some rubber flexi flares more to do with the mud and also looks as they add to the basic 4x4look rather than those fancy plastic looking GXL'S. A bloke I know has fitted these flexi flares to his white RV diesel and look good.
                        I say do it .

The good thing with the Prados both 90S and 120s is they carry a dual placard ,showing both tyre size so a change up to a 265 is ok
