  • BFG muddies

I recently put GXL rims on my 99 RV Prado, with the intention of wrapping these with 265 BFG muddies, but was told their wouldn't be enough clearance? I'm sure I read on a forum once that it was until you head into the 275/285 territory that you would have to start making suspension changes. The GXL rims came with 265 Maxxis 771s with heaps of clearance, surely someone out their has put 265 muddies on their 90 series Prado?

They will fit, but will scrub on the mud flap when turning, unless to have a 2 inch lift minimum. But forget about the BFG's they are over rated, and over priced, there are many other brands out there that are cheaper and better. I just put some Achillies Desert Hawk XMT's on and they are awesome and 1/2 the price.
You will also need to consider the change in ratio the larger tyres will give you with the RV having a smaller tyre to start with.
97 VX Grande, with front & rear air lockers, ARB Sahara winch bar with tigers 11 winch, 2" EFS lift, 265/75/16 Achilles Desert hawk XMT, and more.

      So you've used BFG's then?

I have , they were puncture magnets , always in the sidewall 10mm from the tread. 3 ply side walls of tissue paper.Ok on road but let them down a bit off road and the sidewalls cop all the twigs /branches or anything sticking up out of the ground.

The size 265/75/16 will fit with gxl 16x7 rims if you don't mind taking the front mud flaps off, tap the inner guards (at the bottom where it joins the floor) back 10-15mm and refit the mudflaps.

Quoting just the width of the tyre is one part of determining the tyre size. You would need to provide the aspect ratio and the diameter of the wheel too.

You'll have to tell us what magical tyres outperform those!

I've used Bridgestone D694, Mickey Thompson MTZ, BFG KM2 and now Maxxis Bighorns. The MTZ's and KM2's were the best by a long shot.

The MTZ lasted 40 thousand K's and were very slippery in the wet (but were great for the first 5000k's), they also were crap off road, could not get much grip, they also suffered block movement. The BF's were getting punctures left right and centre, and the car shaked because they would not balance up properly.
The last set of tyres I had on the beast were just cheap Nankang Mudstars, which I never had a problem with, they gripped, never got punctured, and made a lot of people think about just using cheap tyres on their 4b because they out performed their name brand tyres, I'm currently using the Achilles Dessert Hawk XMT and very happy with them, they are 1/2 the price of the name brands so it is a win win situation.

Interesting how we have different results. What kind of terrain do you usually drive? None of my comparisons consider mud - I don't play in it enough to judge.

I sold my MTZ's so don't know how long they went for. Great grip on/off road.

Abused 5x KM2's from beginning till end (~60k) and they never let me down. No punctures but they did have balance issues! Also note, different size (255/85R16).

Haven't tried the cheapies you mentioned and probably won't be able to, given the rare size I run.

Like you, I decided to try some cheapies - Maxxis Bighorns. They were $300 ea compared to $360 for KM2's. It was a big mistake as their grip is far worse on road, gravel roads and on rocks.

I use my tyres on all sorts of terrain, from H'Way, rocky, sand, mud ect.

Not to start a Toyota-Nissan thing but to answer you'r question, i have BFG Km2's (265/75/16)on a standard height GXL and it only just slightly rubs the drivers side mud guard when turning right.

I love them. Id rather have a set of tyres that will get me out of a sticky situation when needed than have a lesser tyre just because i do most k's on the high way. They arn't the best on the sand because of the big tread pattern, they just want to dig down in the soft stuff unlike an AT tyre. I've done about 15K on mine so far and will be buying them again as around the $280 mark is pretty cheap i think for a big tyre.

Not sure if Achilles have improved their quality or not but keep an eye on their side walls.. Ive had that brand before (not a 4x4 tire),the side wall cracks and delaminates from the ply.

That has nothing to do with the quality of the tyre, that is all about low tyre pressures and/or the age of the tyre.
Tyres only have a life of 7 years from date of manufacture, and can not be sold if older than 5 years old.

I also need to get new tyres and wondering should i get 265/70 R16 which is the size i have now or 265/75/R16 just a bit worried the car will go slower [mainly up hills] and cost me more in fuel?
Also do i have to do new diff ratio if i get 265/75/R16?

I am running Achillies but they were on it when i brought the rig.
265/75/16 on std GXL rims,no lift and didnt rub.
Suspension was a bit flogged so now have a 2" lift.
Cant compare to much else and have only done 6000 kms.

Yes the 75 profile will alter your speedo by about 5km at 110kmh.
Does drop the revs a bit then but im still happy with the fuel consumption.
