Has anyone fitted BFG (standard tyre size of 265/70/16) to a GXL and how does the vehicle handle after fitting?

Ive got those on my 98 and want to go bigger, maybe 285/75/16 if they fit on the standard GXL rim. The 265/70/16 are fine for alround offroading in most conditions the pick is the all terrains although ive had the muddies and long trail before in the BFGs.97 Vitara 1.6 JX Day Tripper(550klms range), 98 Prado V6 LPG GXL for Touring (1400klms range), Offroad Cub Camper for Overnight.

Wizard the only thing I ever ran on my 90 was BFG A/Ts. Got 80,000+km out of the first set though they were a bit hard by then and 65,000+km on the second set with another 5 or 10k left.
Would fit them to the D4D if I could get the right size. Good for dirt trails, beach work and not too noisy on the road. Reasonable in light mud but not a heavy duty mud tyre. Good resistance to stakes and scrapes in the bush. Only punctures were caused by house building debris and rubbish on bitumen roads.
Cannot comment on handling compared to the GTs because I changed the tyres in the first 50m (across the road from the Toyota Dealer) but happy with grip and handling except as they wore down at the end of their life. As I said they got hard and were a bit skittish in the wet at that point so I would have changed the second set by 70,000km if I kept the car.
Does that help??My 150 build - http://www.pradopoint.com/showthread.php?27423-A-Random-approach-to-a-Bluestorm-150-GXL-D4D-automatic

Mjrandom,
thanks for the informative reply. I previously had Cooper AT fitted and the car would never steer straight, so I was a little cautious about US brands. I replaced them with Wrangler ATR and they've been fine since.
I'm considering BFG when the Wranglers are due for replacement.
