I have recently put on a set of 265/70/17 Cooper ST Maxx (on a 120). They have done a two week trip thru NW Flinders (lots of very rough station tracks etc) plus there and back from Sydney. I am very impressed.
Not too noisy (just a low rumble on the hi-way) but great grip and good float on creek sand at low pressures. Good up those rock hill climbs (Mt Gill on Warraweena Station)
For you it means going up to 265/75/16 if you are happy to live with the extra bit of clearance. A bit pricy but excelent, and no punctures!Steve

Everyone has their 'favourite' tyres and I am not sure how you make up your own mind. I have just been through the task after being a bit disappointed with the 46,000 kms I only got out of my Goodyear Wrangler A/Ts which I payed $300 each for 2 years ago. Decided on Toyo All Country A/T IIs from Tyrepower for $280 each fitted with a free check of the wheel alignment after 5000 kms and they will rotate for free every 20,000 kms. I rotate every 10,000 but will take them up on the offer every second time. These are 265/65/R17 BTW.
These tyres are highly recommended by SOME.Terry

+1 for the Cooper ST max. I took ST's to the cape and was very glad for the more agressive tread pattern whan going down a few muddy slopes - eg the Pascoe. I would go an All terrain tyre for the cape. The ST max are not too noisy IMOGreg - 08 D4D Prado,
Some trips done - Cape York, Fraser Island, Simpson Desert / Central Aust, Vic High Country.
