  • Goodyear MTR's (and a couple of other questions re. wheels)

    Gday,

Looking at getting some new rubber (and maybe wheels) very soon. I'll be after mud terrains.
The three I've been suggested (in 265/75/16) have been:
    Mickey Thompson MTZ $350
    BFG M/T $280 runout model
    Goodyear MTR $280

now, I know from a couple of people I've talked too that the BFG's are a good, lasting tyre. The Mickey's are obviously good, but are they worth the extra money? But haven't really heard any opinions on the goodyear's.

Also I've been looking at wheels, Mickey Thompson "Torque" looks pretty good. Is there any issues running a 16x8 rim on a VX? The standard wheel is a bit narrower yes? And the PCD of the prado, is it 6/5.5? I'd be looking at around a 0 offset.

And last of all, where's the best place to buy wheels/tyres around melbourne? anyone that stands out with competitive prices?

    Thanks,
    Rob

you wont have a problem with the 16x8 rim (0 offset) can't speak from exp re: the tyres, but when I upgrade I'll probably get MTZ's or STT's. I have heard good things abut the Wrangers as well.

I highly doubt you will be able to get the Mickeys for that price after last monday as they have gone up nation wide. If you can I would be grabbing it.

You should add Mickey Thompson ATZ 4 ribs to your list. I had a set of 4 ribs fitted to my 90 series a couple of weeks ago and couldn't be happier. The only off roading i have done since having them fitted was at Bribie island, i drove up the beach and went home via the inland track which is a little rough in places and they performed well. On road they handle well in wet or dry and aren't to noisy, they look great on the truck too . Paid $290 each but as of last week they have gone up to about $320-$330 each.
99 GXL V6, 2" EFS suspension lift, ARB winch bar, Mickey Thompson ATZ 4ribs, ARB on board compressor, front and rear airlockers, Hella 4000's, ARB ally roof rack, Ausguard cargo barrier, Safari snorkel, t max 9000lb winch, t max recovery kit,105 amp/hr Thumper dual battery system, Waeco CF50 dual zone,OZtent RV5, ERPS rust protection, PP stickers.

I was quoted those prices for the MTZ's and BFG's on friday. The guy at the shop said the MTZ's had already gone up, whereas the BFG's were going up at the end of the month.

i had wranglers on mine and i have them on my 75 series IMO they perform well over all but in mud you have to lower your pressures for them to perform well.... i went from 32inch bf muddies to 33inch wranglers on my ute and i think the wranglers are better on road. i would buy them again for the right price....
in saying that i have just brought my first set of mickey t's MTZ's for the prado, the reasions being i wanted to give them a try and they were the right price!!
i brought 285/75R16 MTZ's foor $325 each just before the price rise.

I have have a set of GY Wrangler MT/R's and so far can't fault them. They perform good on road ( in the wet and dry)with not a lot of tyre noise. Off-road in mud and on rocks they good as well, as Beast2h said just lower the pressure a bit.
My set is 305/70R16's on std Land Cruiser alloys.

ended up getting them, some pics of them in this thread here viewtopic.php?f=38&t=4828

haven't driven on them much, but so far they're fine on road. will be good to test them offroad.
thanks for the tips re. lowering the pressure in mud.
