  • Tyers and Gear ratios.

    Hi .
    I have just bought a 2001 prado, 3400 auto.
It has a 2 inch lift with 285/75/16 Cooper St Fitted.
Looks great but seems to use alot of petrol and seems to kick down alot.
Can anyone let me know what distance they get out of both tanks, and will changing down to 265/75/16 help with gear ratios and fuel consumption. Do 265/75/16 still fill the guard with the 2 inch lift.

    Cheers. Dan

    Hi Dan,
I have 265/75/16's on mine I usually get around about 1000k's out of both tanks towing a jayco camper trialer on the highway. The best I had was 1300k's not towing but we had the DPchip installed but we were still loaded up for camping. here are some photos of the micky thompson's 4 rib and a 2 inch lift. Not to sure about the gear ratio side of things, but our sits nicley in the one gear we dot have many kickbacks at all.

      Hey Dan,

keep in mind that a 285/75R16 is 33x11.5inches,

and 265/75R16 is 32x10.5 inches, so its only an inch different. I noticed a difference in power when up sizing, so I sure you would notice a change in consumption & power, even if its only slight. Mines a diesel, so its a bit more sluggish.

I used to have a V6 3.4 auto with 265/75/16 tyres on and did around 800 ks on both tanks. I would say the 285s are to big and causing the high fuel problem.

Roughly how many litres is that ?

I run about 900km with about 120L. I don't like letting the tanks get much below 1/4 tank each.

I'm currently looking into options for tyres for my 2001 3l TD manual Prado. What is critical for gearing is the overall diameter of the tyre- this varies with width/profile combinations. Good tyre sellers have reference charts for the different brands/products they sell. These variances not only affect gearing, but speedo reading as well

I get about 1100km from both tanks with 285/75R16, mine is a V6, but it's a manual, so won't be quite the same as the Auto, I think with the gearing change of the bigger tyres the Auto would be thirstier than the manual.

The 265/75R16's will improve it slightly, but you might as well run the 33's down, as the cost of changing tyres wont be recouped in fuel savings.
