Hi all, just posting to say I just had some new Goodyear MTR Kevlars 265/75/16 put on the Prado. They are a very strange looking tyre. I was actually chasing the old style MTR but apparently they have been superseded and are no longer available. The strange thing is, they appear to be a directional tyre but I have been assured that they aren't. They haven't been off the bitumen as yet as they are only 2 days old, but on the road they don't seem too bad in regards to noise. They aren't obviously a road tyre, but not too bad non the less. Has anyone else got this tyre yet, and if so what are your thoughts? It was a bit disappointing in the fact you can only have them mounted one way, so the white lettering must be presented to the outside of the wheel if you grab my drift. I'm not generally a fan of the white side out. I will take some photos tomorrow and post them both here and in my rig build up section.

Re: New MTR Kevlars
Yeah mate they are, Kevlar in there as well apparently. Not too sure why they changed the pattern either.Brett

Re: New MTR Kevlars
I have these in 265/70/17, posibly done around 3,000kms now.
I replaced MTZ's in the same size and so far have found these perform much better on road.
They don't feel "blocky" - feel the tread blocks at low speed, and seem to stick to the road a lot better, MTZ's would spin on dry road.
Wife likes them and road noise has decreased as well.
The pattern is asymmetric, meaning that they are NOT directional BUT they do have a inside and outside tread pattern. The large blocks ALWAYS are on the outside.
Side effect is the white lettering, you do not have a choice of displaying the writing. (in some of the larger sizes you can request NO white lettering)

Re: New MTR Kevlars
I've got the old style and was very impressed. Went in to get a fifth just recently and they had this one on display and noticed the strange tread pattern. Luckily they managed to find me a new superseded tyre (simply so they'd match my others).
Does anyone know the reason behind the tread pattern? I realise they have an inside and outside but what's the reason for the difference?

Re: New MTR Kevlars
I was told there was a problem with shredding at low pressures so the MTR tread pattern needed to be updated in general. However I agree, the tread pattern was fine I thought, as I said in a previous post, I ran 37x12.5x15s on my TJ Jeep and they were a great tyre. I also think that the MTR has taken on a more aggressive AT approach with the new tread pattern, as this tyre is supposed to be much better in regards to road characteristics. They have introduced Kevlar into the sidewalls too, however I think they may have always had the Kevlar without really advertising it, not sure though. They do feel pretty good in the wet, where as the old MTRs didn't and also road noise isn't so bad. However this can be put down to the different in sizes I am comparing. In regards to the noise, they don't sound like a road tyre, but they are bearable. The Missus doesn't complain about them when she is in the car, she comments more about the whistling snorkel.Brett

Re: New MTR Kevlars
Sorry to dig up an old post, but I'm looking to buy a set of these. Currently best price I have is $335each for set of 5 265/75/16.Originally posted by xlr8_87Does anyone know the reason behind the tread pattern? I realise they have an inside and outside but what's the reason for the difference?
The theory behind the tread is the inner, closer spaced blocks are to give good on-road handling and noise reduction, whereas the outer, more open block pattern is obviously better for off-road and mud terrain. They are a Hybrid tyre, which I think suits most of us weekend warriors
Any long-term comments on those that have had them for more than a year now ? How are they wearing? The old pattern used to get very noisey when it wore down.

Re: New MTR Kevlars
40,000kms now- the news is still good.
would be about 1/2 worn- seen plenty of dirt roads weekend 4x4ing and towing duties.
If I had a problem- it would be with the IFS and our roads/ roundabouts/ camber the blockyness of the front tread blocks can wear- rounding the edges.
I have gone against the assemetric design (after 35,000kms) and now have the smaller (inner) tread blocks to the outside on the front only.
I'm about to travel 14,000kms from Brisbane to Cameron's corner across the Nullarbor to Perth and back towing our off road van. Will provide an update when we return.
But I'm happy to travel these roads with these tyres in the condition they are in- I would normally replace to be on the safe side.
