  • RV rims

My RV only comes with 16 x 6 inch rims and currently has 225/75 16 rubber on it. Im in need of something new and want a more aggressive AT, Cooper ST maybe.
However the rims are so narrow. Does anyone think it'd be worthwhile getting some bigger rims and therfore rubber? Not huge, just standard GXL size, which i think is 16 x 7.
The problem is getting steel rims, will probably end up with sunraysias which i love anyway.
Also does anyone know if the tyre price goes up alot from what would go on a 16x6 rim to a 16x7 rim?

Sunraysias are good, but be carefull to get the corect offset, 90series prados have a uncommon offset. Also watch if you upsize the tyers on an RV you will need to get some flares to keep them legal.
You'll probably find the larger tyers are actually cheaper, as they are more common, supply and demand.

Another option is to put larger (in diameter, but not in width) tyres on your existing rims.

Usually it's a larger diameter we're after (for additional ground clearance). Whilst additional width can help in some circumstances, it all depends on the type of country you'll be driving over.

From memory, if you step up to a 235/85R16, you go up about 30mm in dia (805mm - about 32"), but can fit them on the standard 6" rims. These are the same size tyres as the old 7.5x16 tyres found on every cruiser split rim around the country if bush replacements are ever needed.

An added benefit, if you travel with other GXL and up prados, or with friends in cruisers, etc who have 265/75R16's on 7" wide rims, you'll find that your 235/85's are the same diameter as the 265/75 - just narrower. Means there be extra spares around if ever needed in an emergency.

        Just a thought anyway.

After some more research at lunchtime, im considering some 16 x 7 sunraysias, and 265/70 16 maxxis mt753. I was told i could get 245/75 for about $245 a tyre, so ill go in the arvo and see what he says about the 265/70, its probably getting over my budget a bit though.
For a good quality tyre in the price range my next option is probably a toyo OPAT but they are only AT, i was really after an aggressive AT/MT.

          ARRGGHHHH too many options!!!

            Rubber update

Well ive done it, the tyre mob has ordered 5 white sunraysia rims and some cooper STs will go on tommorow or friday. Went with the bigger rubber, 265/75, should make the queen look much better sitting up a bit higher with bigger shoes

I will also need some sort of flares as has been mentioned, any ideas anyone? The moulded to suit arb version is $300 a pair apprently, but i can get some rubber strip that screws in for $120, any other options?

            cheers

I also have the RV model (TD) and fitted ROH 16x7 rims. They are the Navara offset which apparently is the closest offset to the Prado.

I fitted the Toyota aftermarket flair kit for the RV model, around $300 but they dont make them any more, which is a bit of a bugger as I tore off the part that fits directly onto the door and Toyota couldnt supply any of the multi sided sticky tape needed to stick it back onto the door. I had to resort to buying some U shaped rubber strip from UES and relying on the brackets to hold it all in place. You can hardly notice the difference and its held on OK so far.

I fitted 265/75 BFG muddies and found that they rubbed on full steering lock. As a result I removed the "lump" from the wheel arch lining, exposing a sharp seam and everytime I had sudden full compression on the suspension I risked tearing out a long strip of rubber in the middle of the tyre (a bit of surgery with a cold chisel and gympie fixed that problem).

In the end I put in a Dobinson suspension upgrade and that solved all the rubbing and compression problems (apart from extreme cases). A two inch lift ended up being more like 5 inches!

You'll find the vehicle will loose a bit of oomph due to the larger tyres, but its not significant in my opinion and my wife never noticed any change.

The larger wheels and BFG muddies completely transformed the vehicle, now if I only had the money for a locker I recon it'd be pretty much unstoppable.

                They're on!

Sorry about the delay in updating folks. The Coopers went on without a drama, the only thing was the spare needs a spacer or something to keep the tyre from touching the rear windscreen.
The queen sits up higher and looks so much better! The noise at 100 km is maybe slightly more but nothing to concern me, and only rubs very slightly at full lock.
I havnt had the chance to try them out for real yet but im very happy with my purchase so far. I was looking at the mid range tyres but in end decided to just spend the money, maybe ill save on something else.
The bloke at the tyre place reckons they wont need flares "legally", but mightnt hurt to avoid a few flying rocks.
                Thanks for all the help.

What rims did you end up getting? Offset?
I have a RV and want to know what offset for 7" rims i need.

Any chance of a photo of her now?

Im not sure ofthe offset or how you tell what it is. The tyre mob just managed to get the right ones! They are 16x7, i believe ROH rims.
I will get a before and after photo up soon.

                      slug,
                      Just a bit of a warning re-speed cameras,radar etc.
I am not sure of your original placard tyre size but if it was the 225/75x16, by fitting the 265/75x16 you will now be traveling at about 108kph when your speedo reads 100kph.

                          Genuine 16x7 rims!

                          Hi,

Sorry this is a bit late to help, but for future reference - I needed a 2nd spare wheel, so decided to check Toyota's price for reference. Turns out the genuine 16x7 GXL steel rim is around $175 full price. Comes carefully wrapped and packed in a box with foam packing to ensure no scratches! I can't find the invoice, but got it for less than the $175, as that Toyota dealer offers a discount to my 4WD club.

I also had to cough up a mere $8 or so for a set of steel wheel nuts, as they are different to the alloy ones (my Prado has the 3-spoke alloys).

Let's be accurate about it then...

OK - In response to an enquiry from a forum member, I dug out the invoice for the genuine 16x7 steel rim. Amazing how one's own decisions look better and better as time passes... and details fade. If you're buying new rims, it's still a cheap option. I'd tried the wreckers with no luck for 2nd hand rims.

Purchased Nov 2005 from a Melbourne dealer.
Rim Product code: TO-4260135740 Unit list price $224.00 excl GST.
Wheel nuts Product code: TO-9094201075 Unit list price $5.95 excl GST.

As I mentioned, the dealer gives a discount to my 4WD club, which brought the rim price *incl GST* back under $200. (I also bought 7 wheel nuts on top of that.)

Since I'm not sure about naming names in a public forum, if anyone wants further info, PM me a phone number and I'll give you a ring.

                              RV tyres

Hi, ive been following the RV tyre subject for a while now and had read on Landcruiser online that 235/85/16 on standard 16x6 rims rub on the rear wheel arch. The standard RV tyres are what i have and they are rather pathetic off road. They are getting worn and have seen some cheap 235/85/16 tyres, second hand, but i am worried they will not fit. Has anyone got 235/85 on their Prado or know if they fit?
