  • 235/85/16 's has anybody fitted these ?

    HI All
I have a 90 series SWB kzj with the standard 265/70 tyres fitted and looking to fit a narrower but doesn't want to loose my ride height , now the question is has anybody tried fitting the 235/85 's , do they rub or not and another question Bf's or Coopers for 90% tar and 10% off-road

    thanx

Being a fraction under 32" they shouldn't rub on anything short of full articulation, but you'd be at a higher risk of breaking the bead at lower pressures with such a narrow tyre, and it would probably have an adverse effect on your handling from the track reduction.

Can't offer advice on the tyre brand, I had a bad set of Coopers a few years back, so I'm fairly biased.

Welkom Blouhond, goed om nog 'n Suid Afrikaner hier te sien.

I have to agree with taresk's comments, and haven't heard of many guys that have gone to this size. I would be more interested in 255/85/16, but it would most probably cause more problems as that is a 33" tyre.

Out of interest what's the narrower tyre size for?

Only thing I can think of is fuel consumption because with every other application, the wider the tyre, the better. Especially in a 4wd...

I have 235/85 16s on my lifted TX, they clear everything with no problems, but still rub under full travel on the inner rear guards. I've run this size tyre for many years now on a variety of 'cruisers and find them excellent in all types of terrain. Overall width is not a lot different from a 265, and they are very slightly taller.

Has anyone got a pic with a 90 series with these tyres ? Are they fitted to 6 or the 7 inch rims ?

              cheers

Regarding 235/85/16 on RV6 having cooper st's fitted recently, love the tyres but have noticed several things about them as with upsizing any tyre. These changes are more significant with an RV6 as I have gone from

                215/80/16 dia 750mm to
                235/85/16 dia 810mm (cooper st's)
                and increase of 8%

where as if I had a GXL with 7" rims standard would be

                265/70/16 dia 777mm an increase of 4%

Have no issues with rubbing but have a recent 2" lift...

Have noticed considerable lack of braking performance and it's a bit more unstable on the road, which I have now got used to, not to mention that my gear ratio is now 8% taller which no doubt would be a contributing factor to my reduction in fuel economy! The tyres are very similar size to a troopy which have 6" rims so it's a very common combination but have noticed these changes when fitted to an RV6. None the less I wouldn't swap them for anything at the moment as I'm on an extended touring trip but once back in the city I'd like to get a set of standard rims with 225/75/16 which I had previously.

I'm sure Blouhond has bought some tyres now but as for percentages coopers website says "cooper st 60% Road & Sand, 40% Dirt & Mud"
