ive had my cooper st on for 20 000km as well, look really good, bugger all wear, handle really well in the sand and dirt, not to bad in the mud and also handle the black stuff good. so i hope this confuses you more. cheers samo

Re: what All terrains to go for ?

I have had my Cooper ST's on for about 18 months, done about 60, 000 clicks on them and would say that I have about 40% tread left.

I have done all sorts of driving, road, gravel, sand and mud. The longest road trip was from Newcastle to Rockhampton during a hot summer. Sand driving is usually on Stockton beach, and as for the bush and mud, they are alright.

IMO, it would come down to tyre pressure and maintenance. For everyday road use, I use 40 PSI, and for the sand, about 12 PSI, and in the bush I very between 18 PSI and 25 PSI. I rotate the tyres every 5000 kays.

I will mention one thing though, one tyre has began to lose a few nobs on the outside wall, maybe even de-laminating. This I did notice after a day trip on Stockton beach, so, I may have caught the edge of a broken beer bottle that some miserable lazy good for nothing two bit pot bellied knob jockey left behind.

I have found the tyres to be good on the road in all conditions. Not too noisy, smooth ride, good grip and not too bad in the wet. Just like anything, adjust your driving style to the conditions.

      I hope this helps

P.S. In saying all that, I will be changing brands next time I buy tyres, may be leaning towards the Mickey Thompsons. Good Luck

Re: what All terrains to go for ?

        I like the Bridgestone D694, viewtopic.php?f=55&t=9429
Very happy with them so far. Very good braking wet and dry grip and quiet.
Haven`t had a chance to take them off road properly, but that isn`t going to happen until the high country dries out a bit and it gets a bit warmer.
If I get 60000km out of them I will be happy, don`t want rock hard tyres that don`t wear.

I work on shift with around 100 or so guys and many have been all around Australia, we do regular trips into the Vic Alps/ High Country etc. Funnily enough no-one at work that has fitted Coopers has ever got a second set.
But then mate has done Simpson, Cape York, and Kimberley on his Cooper`s ST with his 90 series Prado. I have driven his car many times and personally don`t like them on the bitumen as much as BFG or the D694, especially as they get older and half worn, too hard, poor grip on wet bitumen.
stepped up the a 200 LC for towing,
but had a 2012 and 2010 150 Prado GXL auto diesel in Graphite with Bridgestone D697 A/T. Dobinson C59-300/325 and Bilsteins. Accessories : two baby seats. Sidewinder`s Dual Battery isolator and rear power outlet kit. Pirana Battery tray, Hayman Reese towbar with Toyota wiring kit and Brains`s guard.

Re: what All terrains to go for ?

          Hi Wazza

There will really be no one tyre that makes every one happy ....

That said I have run Coopers ATR's and been happy with the ride, grip & lack of noise, naturally though there is a BUT
As my Prado is a second vehicle it only gets used for off roading or long trips, the Simpson, Cape York etc and it on these trips the passenger construction of the 265/70 ATR as opposed to Light truck has shown to be there weak point. As on these style of trips the Prado was heavily loaded, 4 passengers, loaded roof rack, rear compartment packed... the lighter construction of the Coopers in this size lead to tyre failures. Yes I reduced tyre pressures, reduced speed to 80 km/hr but compared to the LT Tyres on the other vehicles with me I had more tyre issues.

I don't believe it was a Cooper Tyres fault but more a result of running "passenger" tyres rather than Light Truck tyres with their heavier/stronger construction.

So what would I recommend ... if you use your Prado as a daily driver with limited or light off road use a passenger type ATR will suit as they affect your fuel consumption & ride quality less than what a LT ATR will but ( there's that word again  ) if your wanting to do more offroad and long trips fully loaded I would recommend a LT ATR. I have fitted the Bridgestone LT ATR to replace the Coopers and they are certainly a better tyre for MY application however they are a heavier tyre and have slightly increased my fuel consumption but are still a quiet tyre.

As with so many things it comes down to personal choice based on application and you may even be better with a more aggressive tyre if doing lots of gravel roads, rocky terrain so have a good think about what you are doing or want to do and then make an uneducated guess  and remember to always drive to suit your tyres and the conditions.

Oh yeah, on a side note I managed to score a set of Goodyear Wrangler MTR's 265/75 which I use for more "serious" fun play but they are noiser, don't ride as well on road and have added 1 litre/100 km to my consumption so would never suit me as daily driver tyres.

Just my thoughts, sorry for the epic

what All terrains to go for ?

Last car I had Cooper st's and got 100,000 kms from them good off road and on road so I would recommend them just have tyres rotated as recommended

For a cheaper option have a look at Maxxis tyres

Re: what All terrains to go for ?

Thought I would give the Cooper St-C a whirl. They seem damned expensive to me. Was quoted $422 each today at ARB Artarmon and they would not budge on the price at all. Considering I'll purchase 6 at once I was hoping for a break in price.

You could always go to someone like Jaxx that guarantees to beat competitors quotes so you end up with the best price.

to get coopers in newcastle you have to go through oneils tyres, as they r the only agents im lead to beleive, and coopers put a set price on the tyres so there is very little room to move, eg lucky to be $5 per tyre, other places might be able to get them but they will put their price on top. cheers samo

Called Tempe Tyres and the girl tried to tell me there is only one Cooper available in a 265/70 17 which is the HT. People like this who argue (or more lie than argue) with you really get up my nose. She said she would get one of the boys to call me back.

Even if they are cheaper they don't instil any confidence to do business with them. At least ARB has treated me well.

I'm with you with respect to this. If a company does me wrong in any way, shape or form (information, customer service, quality of service etc), I am happy to voice my concern and tell them bluntly that I'll be taking my business elsewhere. I will pay a little extra if it gets me quality service.

Re: what All terrains to go for ?

Just received my call back from Tempe Tyres and they quoted a price of $350 each fitted and balanced for the Cooper ST-C's.

This is $72 less than as quoted by ARB Artarmon (Traction 4) so I called them. They said they believe that Tempe is a grey importer and there may be some warranty issues so I called Cooper (National Tyre Wholesalers).

Cooper advised that is correct (they answered very quickly so must be known area of contention with Tempe). Tempe purchases direct by container from the USA and the tyres sold there are not honored by the Cooper Aust. warranty. Mick @ Cooper also advised the tires can be the same model but possibly lighter construction etc. No way for me to really know but I have to trust someone eh?

Anyway after much conversation w/Mick I decided to move from the ST-C and go the STTs. The price difference between the two is $1 so it really is a matter of personal choice etc. He also noted they will not perform as well as a street tire on wet bitumen but if you keep the pressures down to around 30-32 psi in town they do well for a muddie.

So back to ARB Artarmon and placed my order for 6 (ouch :!: $%#@) STTs to be fitted.
