  • Best price for tyres in sydney?

    Hi Guys,

First post and I'm afraid its not a very exciting one..
Just wanted to get some recommendations for places in Sydney that do a good deal on Dunlop AT20s. I was quoted 325 + GST by mechanic. Thats inclusive of labour and balancing.

    Thanks in advance!

murphy, don't know if this helps much ... but ... I tend to use Jaxx Quickfit no matter where I am simply because they will match/beat quotes. They are also national so if I am travelling and have issues I can stop in and see them.

Also, having recently dealt with both the Tuggeranong (two new Goodyear Wrangler SA/AT $320@) and Belconnen (geting the spare replaced with a new Goodyear Wrangle SA/AT tomorrow for $288 on sale) branches here in Canberra, they have excellent customer service and that is the sort of thing I like. I have made several enquiries about tyres and wheels and if they are unsure they get back to me when they say they will, unlike other places.

Try Tempe Tyres. We have got our last 4 sets of tyres (for 2 cars) from there. Much cheaper than anyone else in Sydney as far as I could see.

            Thanks for your reply.
I tried Tempe Tyres for a quote and they were offering a price of $275 inc gst and alignment which is a good price. I will see if i can get better but now, after reading some other posts on here i am a bit unsure whether i should change my rims. Ive got R17 alloys on it from previous owner. Would changing for R16 steel rims be a better choice for off-roading and better tyre choice or does it matter?
            Your advice would be appreciated!
            Thanks

Re: Best price for tyres in sydney?

There is more tire choices in 16's, and they're possibly cheaper(?), but I think it's hard to justify the cost of changing rims for these reasons. Smaller rims allows larger rubber (sidewalls), which is better offroad after reducing air pressure, but we're only talking about a small difference in this case. So again, I don't think it's worth the expense.

Steel vs alloy? This is where it get's interesting, and you'll need to weigh up these points given you're own situation and travel plans:
              - Steel is considerably cheaper, to BUY.
              - Steel is better for durability; if they bend, you can bend them back, anywhere, anytime. Whilst alloys will fracture or break, and you're up for a new one or a specialised repair.
              - Heavy steel rims will require more energy to spin and stop, thus reducing performance. Weight also places greater forces on the suspension (consider a rough or corregated road - is the suspension controlling the wheels, or vise versa?)

I rarely travel through very isolated areas so don't require the durability of steel. I'll stick to alloys for their weight advantages.

Offset is another important factor. Check what your existing rims are - a good range is around +15 (original) to about 0 (wider track).

Your comments have been very helpful. I'll stick with the alloys!

For around the $300 mark, you should be able to get BFG ATs.

Buy the tyres based on what your driving will be . The coopers and scorpians are good but personally I like BFG AT's based on their proven performance in rough terrain .
