  • Maxxis AT-700's... What are they like?

I'm shopping for some new rubber. Considering going for Maxxis??? Not alot is said about them, however my mate has Maxxis 751's on his prado and my old man rusn the same tyre on his Sahara. I'm not too sure whether the AT-700 would be a little better Off road than the 751 or not? Can anybody shed any more light on this? :?

I had a set of MAXXIS, it may have been just a bad set, but the noise drove me crazy. A bit of my experience is documented in the posts below. Got so bad I replaced them with Grandtreks. When these needed replacement recently, I went for the Bridgestone 694 LTs which are a bit more agressive than the GTs and a lot quieter than the MAXXIS!!!

Bear, your maxxis from memory were an old design, these are the latest update which is very different.

I'm thinking of getting some of these too. My garage man quoted $254 each. Have you any prices for them? I'm still thinking and haven't made any final decision yet.

Try the Nankang Mudstars, cheaper again, come from the same factory as the maxxis, and are quite on the road, and give good traction off the road. I have them and love them.

try jaxx, they were $220 for a 265/65/r17. i would imagine a 16 would be cheaper?

"Try the Nankang Mudstars, cheaper again, come from the same factory as the maxxis," - I work for Maxxis in the UK and just wanted to let you know that Nankang do NOT come from the same factory as Maxxis tyres. I won't make any further comment as I might be considered biased but just wanted to put the record straight.

I want to thank everyone for thier advice. Have just had a set of 751's fitted. They seemed to be tried and tested and at $175 a foot, I just couldn't get past the price. I'll try them out and see how i go with them.

                      Hi Byrning,

i fitted a set of Maxxis 751 on my proado in July last year and for everyday driving around town - not a problem. i havent done alot of off road, just some tame stuff and a far bit of beach / sand work. to date, they have failed me or even look like it. for their price, i think that they are well worth it. sure, if i was going across or around the country, i might reconsider. but at this stage, they are good for me

                      regards Tony

OK, some progress made: one step forward and one step back. I went to order some AT-700s from my local garage man today who looks after my rig and he said $260 a corner all up but to see what other places are asking and he might be able to match them. Bob Jane had none and don't buy them in as they have their own supplier and are selling the AT-771s for $249 a corner. So I phoned Jax and what they said about the BJ 771s that they tried to sell me I won't say here but suffice to say that they were very similar but not the same. The Jax AT-700s would cost me $235 a corner but there are none in the country and I would have to wait 4/6 weeks and did I want to put my name down to hold some when they come in which I did. I then phoned my local garage man again and told him the story and he said he'd phone the supplier and see if that was true which it was: there are none available for 4/6 weeks. So it's either wait or buy some 771s from BJ. I think I'll wait.

I originally wanted Micky T ATZ's or BFG A/T but both were 4-6 weeks away at the time So I had to settle for the ATR's which haven't been too bad so far....

They look very similiar to the Bridgestone D694's, which are great on road, but quite limited offroad. Still, they could be another option if you don't want to wait.

The 751's have done me pretty well on trails, sand and some rocky stuff. I be sure to let the pressures right down though.
