275/70 16's Clearance?

Hi all, i have a set of Cooper ATR's 265/75 16 on our Grande that were on it when we bought it.
Have been relatively pleased, except for the chunks that come out of them every time they look at a rock.
My spare is still a 265/70
Haven't worried about swapping the spare, till we got a flat a few weeks ago.
My hunt is now on for one tyre for the spare for now, then the rest of the set will follow to match the spare once the Coopers are worn out.

My question is: Will a 275/70 fit without scrubbing out on full lock or full articulation???
Overall rolling diameter of the 275 is about the same, which is good. they equate to 31.6 inches the same as the Cooper 265's
I have had a bit of a look at it on full flex before & the 265's are close to the inner guards..

My dilemma is, the thing is a daily driver for the Rev Limiter & she wont put up with the howling of a set of Muddies everyday, so i want a reasonable aggressive set of ATR's, at least a little more open cut than the Cooper ATR's without going to a ST or STT.

I found this in a 275 & hence my question on sizes.

The only problem you may get is the tyre may hit a bolt that holds the front mudflap on when you turn to either full lock.

Another spot to watch in this case is the rear wheel arches. Under maximum compression the rear tire will go right up inside the wheel well, and possibly snag on the wheel arch (plastic trim) when exiting.

Exact tire sizes will differ between brand/models, but theoretically they're 10mm wider and 10mm shorter than what you have. Which leads me to ask, why this size?

Personally, I'd stick with 265/75R16, because:
* It's taller
* It's a more common size, so more choices now, and better availability when outback.
* 265 is wide enough onroad - going wider will increase fuel consumption. If you want wider offroad, simply drop some preasure.
* It's what you have, and you need to match them. Don't run mixed sizes (265/75 and 265/70) for too long because that 1" of difference will cause uneven wear. Also, don't consider matching the odd size with a second odd size - the front and rear axles need to match or you may get transmission issues when in locked 4x4.

Buy 2x 265/75R16's and put an old one on the back.

Hi Fellas. I am glad someone else is going up this road. My Prado is on 265/70x16's on 8" rims and I didn't fit the 275/70x16's last time around as I was under the impression that I would have to buy 5 to have a matching spare (and I also didn't want to pack out the spare wheel carrier). I was running a tape over the wheels of a mates Isuzu the other day and his had 275's on. They are the same overall diameter as the 265's (but look real fat and mean) so no transmission/diff issues with running a skinnier spare any distance when you have a puncture. I have covered 45,000 km in a year on this set of Bridgestones (1/2 worn) so it will be a while before I replace them. Then I can sort out clearance issues. Cheers, Derb.

Hi Derb, i did some measuring too & some checking of a few tyres.
My 265's are 804mm rolling diameter & the 275's are 800mm. Bugger all really & a bit wider to boot

I would flick the 265/70 spare though, as it is too much of a difference in diameter to use for anything other than a pure emergency.

My dilemma is that all of the tyres on my car have heaps of tread left, so i only need one for now to get the same diameter spare.
Where i become a pain in the ass is a want to try a different tyre to my Cooper ATR's next time, so i'm trying to buy a spare tyre now. Then i will eventually buy a full set to match it when the others wear out.

I'm kinda leaning towards the Yokahama Geolander AT-S or Bridgestone D694.
Was looking at the Mickey Thompson5 Rib, but have read a few things about them having puncture prone sidewalls.

Hi Jay. Am more than happy with my Bridgestone 694's. Very good to drive on and wearing well across whole tyre. No feathering or uneven wear. I suspect I will get about 80 - 90k out of this set. Think I will stick with these Bridgestones for the next set as well. Cheers.

I had 694's on my last 4be, nice AT, but offroad they don't compare to a MTZ (did that sound like a challenge??).

Why wider though? The only thing I see them good for is beach driving and very deep sloppy mud (which will end in a bog anyway).

Hi Glen. You nailed it. I don't do much off road driving but live near the beach and find the 265's need a bit of care in the soft dry sand. Gotta say they look pretty impressive as well. Cheers, Derb.

Hi Glen.
I only really ended up looking at the 275's to broaden my options on tyre tread patterns. The width wasn't really a concern for me.
The Continental's i posted look pretty agressive for an All Terrain & might be a good compromise for me, but aren't available in a 265.
It's a bugger that it has to be a daily driver, otherwise it woulf just slap a good set of Muddies on it for sure.
Im finding it hard just finding a tyre that won't howl to death & drive the Minister for Love, War & Finances nuts, but is still open enough in the tread pattern to let me have a play on the weekends ;-)

Unlucky....

Daily driver & I have BFG MT2's.....

Once the first set (BFG MT's) did close to 100,000km, minister for finance was more than happy! When I do go offroad I don't worry much about the weather either & on a recent trip to Fraser spent 99% of the time in high range unlocked - simply floated over the sand with a bit of air out.

I have mudz on our daily driver, it's our only car, and my wife has never even mentioned the noise. Prado's have good sound proofing so the noise is heavily dampened - you're more likely to be annoyed by erratic noises from outside (doof doofs and big exhausts). Perhaps it's also the brand, I've read these particular ones are relatively quiet for mudz (and they're also the tallest 265/75R16): http://www.mickeythompsontires.com.au/i ... p?page=MTZ

The only real concern is on-road grip in the wet. If you slow down a little they're fine. I've never had an issue, and have only lost traction when intended, but, if a little hatch suddenly jumps in front and hits the brakes, in the wet, you may clean it up.

(And that's what steel bullbars are for! :twisted: )

Yes I have to agree glen_ep, without antilock in the wet they can lock up easier....although I have never had to emergency brake in the wet, I do know that on wet roundabouts if you give it too many herbs all four wheels will start to slide.....
