  • which 285 muddies???

ok lads the time has come for me to decide what tyres i need!?
what 285 muddies have been the best for you?
ie. wear, noise, grip, puncture resistence, and value?
    just a thought

What sort of driving do you do? Where do you plan on going?

Budget is a big factor too, my #1 choice comes in at $410 a tyre, but if you don't have 2k to spend on tyres, there are heaps of other good options depending on what terrain you use them on, you also need to consider if you're going to use them as daily driver tyres, or only throw them on for off road to save on wear and fuel.

        Re: which 285 muddies???

The old compramise question bites again
i will use it on the black stuff everyday travelling around a small coastal town towing a trailer (running mowing business) but in the mornings and afternoons hitting the beach with a surfboard in the back! 8)
Then on the weekends doing some light mud/rut/hill work but i stress fairly light with yes more beach work!
my mates all run muddies on the road but i have to use mine through the day, everyday and they all say muddies go fine on road and sand?!

i also only want one spare so directional is out of the question...

Most muddies do go well on sand (some don't, they just dig holes), but from what you've said your useage is, I'd lean toward an AT, just as good on the sand, better on the road, and a good AT will handle some mud and ruts.

          This would be my recommendation...

Yeah i originally was going to go an AT!
These look good i've heard proComp are pretty nice tyre!
ok so the tyres i was thinking are:

            ProComp AT
            Cooper ST's
            MTZ's
            ProComp muddies

only because some muddies are less agressive and i thought maybe they might be ok? they need to look seriously tough though which is half the aim isn't it?! 8)
if i can get 2-3 years (60-80K) out of a set of tyres i'm happy will any of these muddies make that because i think the sacrifice may be worth it?
any help much appreciated i'll pretty much leave it up to you lads to decided foe me ops:

              Hi,

I am on my second set of Maxxis Bighorn muddies, first set were 285/75/16 fitted to an 80 series wagon, 95% road, some rough rock/mud, they were then fitted to my current HDJ79R ute, which is used as an on site mine vehicle, it does 150km per day on rad and about 50 per day in the mine, that set lasted 68000km, ZERO punctures, the fronts still had 6mm tread, the rears were down to 4mm, the ute has tool boxes on back at a weight of 500kg at all times.

Second set on same ute are 315/75/16 Maxxis bighorns, have done 42000km, same mix of road and mine, zero punctures, still have over 11mm on front and 9mm on rear, they start with 16mm tread depth, noise is ok, but I am in a 79 ute, they are great on wet roads, as good or better than any AT I have used in the past, the last trip up Stockton, on at Lavis lane and off at Anna bay, didnt let tyre pressure down and only used 4wd when required, the big 315's just float the soft stuff.
Mud and rock are thier domain, again, 80% of the time when off road and all the time in the mine, I am in 2WD, you just dont need 4wd, unless towing in mud onsite, then I will go 4wd.

I am very happy with them and got the last 4 315/75/16 fitted to new steel rims for $1600. the tyres alone are $290 is each, 285's were about $240, but that was 24 months ago.

I get mine from Bob Jane, as they are the Importers for Some of the Maxxis tryes, and cannot be beaten on price.

Just a quick opinion to share... if sand is the most common offroading you do, keep away from mudz - they dig.
I was on very soft sand a couple days ago, and whilst I did get through okay, I had to be careful with the throttle. It's not an issue on harder-packed sand though.

so the general concensus is go AT
What is the best AT some many bloddy choices
                  Cooper ST
                  Mickey ATZ's
                  BFG AT

                  has anyone had these?
which would you kind lads choose i personally think the mickeys look pretty tough for an AT?!

                    which 285 muddies???

I have had 2 sets of Cooper st
The first set lasted 100,000 kms and was
                    Very happy with them

The second set I was not happy with them they had un even wear on them like one tire had 3 cm uneven wear and became very rough and noisy and only after about 40,000 kms. May have been un lucky

I would sell recommend as most aggressive all terrain and good on and off road
...If its not on all 4's it's not on.....
