Well I was doing a few calculations. Not just for this trip but for my holidays in october.
And if I was to go this route--
HM to Ceduna SA, glendambo SA via googs, to alice NT, to yulara NT to laverton WA to Kal WA to home. Not including the triping around on the GTG.
    approx 6121Kms. With a fuel figure of 17L/100kms = 1040lts
    At the current $1.70 = $1768....

    If I went via the GCR both ways that drops to 5230K's = 890lts =$1511. @ 17L/100 & $1.70 a litre for diesel.

doesnt mean anything, was just playing with figures.. . I think I might stop playing now.... and start saving...

What I was planning for October this year came to a total of $2500
Might fly or take the bike on that one....
Reminds me of my safari in Africa. Somebody forgot the corkscrew and for several days we had to live on nothing but food and water.

Jeff You are starting to scare me now.
Diesel will be around $2.30L next year so on your figures
      1040lts x $2.30 = $2392.

Methane powered Prado's might be a thing of the future?

Jeff have you done any calculations if we slip stream one another very closely

If we get 10 going over it might be cheaper to buy a bus and do it like the Partridge Family

I think slip streaming must be the way to go, like the tour de france ..

And thats why they put rubber on the back door, So you can nudge up to the guy in front and not cause any damage.
Leachy knows how to do it, well his car does. , Whoops, we are not supposed to talk about that are we.. ops:

I looked up gas prices last week and was astonished. I will probably put away about $2K for gas just in case. With everything said and done I'm expecting this to cost about $15K (US).

                  That's a mammoth effort.
Highly commendable. I'll buy a beer for you as well..

Sounds good to me Jeff with beers and Ill chuck in some bourbons and we will make it a night.

I was talking to a guy tonight who did the trip about 3 years ago and said it takes 3 days from Perth to Alice towing a camper trailer.
                    Perth to Laverton
                    Laverton to Warburton
                    Warburton to Alice
You had to get to Warburton before 5pm or you where locked out for some reason.
He also said it gets below zero at night so bring your gloves and beanies.

Yeah I have heard that as well russ. Stories of sleeping between 2 fires just to keep warm..

I 'm not saying which way to go, but I think the Great central road might be the way to go and return. Both for time and $$$

                      Jeff.

The first 2 days sound about right, but I'd be concerned about doing Warburton to Alice Springs in one stint. that's about 1000km, with about 500km of that (warburton-olgas) on dirt. Others I know who have done similar, break up that last stint into two days (breaking the stint at Yulara/Ayers Rock).

The "campground" at Warburton is behind the roadhouse at the local community, and is surrounded by a chain link / barbed wire fence. You have to be there before 5pm, as that's when the gates were locked when we went through last year. Not sure if that's still the case. Read into that what you may. It was pretty much a dump/tip, and personally I wouldn't want to stop there again.

As for the gloves and beanies, etc. Well it is desert territory, so warm days, cold nights. We had a few days last year out around Alice that were in the -3, -4 overnight. Most nights were in the 0-3 degree temps overnight. This was in late July 2007. Make sure your sleeping gear is well rated for the cold.

On the positive side. The days were nearly all in the 25-30 degree range during the daylight hours. Absolutely wonderful.

Was checking out the oziexplorer site in the treks section. the Warburton campground on the great central road page has NO stars in the accomodation stakes. Might be a good idea to check it out before the sun goes down and if need be travel to a more safe/ friendly camp spot?????

Perhaps you could get some info from wildmangordo on camping around Warburton?
