  • Boogy Hole NT PPGTG

On the issue of Boggy Hole, I have recently driven part of the track last month and beleive it to be a reasonable track to drive in a stock vehicle. I will be conducting a trip hopefully next month or in late April to try and give all a track report. The last time I drove its entire length was April last year and it was no tuff exercise although a long day if you intend not camping overnight. The tracks always change due to the majority of the trail that runs in the creek and Finke River. Since Novembers big rain fall it hasnt really been drivable until only in the last couple of months or so due to water still running under the sand. I dare say by the time PPGTG comes around as long as there hasnt been any recent rain would be easily driven, although slow as there are many sections of rock to negotiate. Panel damage or scatches would only be likely if you had to pass another group heading in the oppisite direction as the track can get rather narrow in parts. Trailers wouldnt be an issue really. I havnt taken my camper trailer down there yet although if I took the Family I would. As long as you have someone to pull you out as the sand can get very soft.To be honest there isnt much to worry about, there a far more tracks out their that are a lot harder then this one,

    Zook.

I'm sure for all of us attending the GTG, having this knowledge will help us decide on whether to drive the Boggy Hole.
I'll be keen to see your track report in due course.

    I appreciate the update.

    regards

OK, we'll start the planning for the trip via Boggy Hole during GTG. The plan would be to camp at Boggy Hole...

Depends on how you set-up. The main area at the end is probably limited to 5-10 proper places for sites, but if you spread out there should be plenty of room along the riverbed.

The main camping area is quite small and is more than likely to be occupied once you get there, although it is possible to camp anywhere along the River. The only problem is that once you pass Boggy Hole camping area you are limited to only small areas to camp since the track leaves the River a few klms further down. Another option is to get permission from the Station owner to camp on his property further along the river(just past Boggy Hole proper turns into private property). I will do some homework and find the name of the Homestead and contact no. just in case. This area is very popular with locals as the official camping area does get full quickly and is far better spot to camp. This is only an option though and all depends on getting permission.

                          Re: Boogy Hole NT PPGTG

                          Hi All,

I can tell you that the Outback 4WD Club did this route last weekend with lots of dramas in the southern part of the route which is that part from Ernest Giles Rd up to Boggy Hole. They encountered a lot of very soft sand that bogged a few of them to the axels. They said that it was too tight in some places to do a snatch and basically needed to winch each other out a few times. The track proved to be a bit confusing at times as it is not all that well marked and they did take a wrong turn at one point, however luckily the track they took petered out after a few 100 metres so they were able to back track quickly to find the right way to go.

                          Cheers

Actually they do a lot of runs but you only hear about the tough ones. The next day really was a tough one with really hard slog bush bashing for the group, they spent a lot of time making tracks navigable by moving boulders etc to hop on to. Actually I am glad I missed this run.
