  • Climbing Uluru/Ayers Rock

This question was asked on Myswag.org and I thought it pertinent to our GTG. Are we able to/planning on climbing Uluru/Ayers Rock? Apparently it’s frowned upon due to it being a ‘sacred site’, is this correct?

You are certainly allowed to climb Ayers Rock, however the climb may be closed on certain days if the temperature is above 40 degrees or the wind is considered too strong. There are notices placed around the Ayers Rock resort to notify you if the climb is closed.

As for the Aboriginal cultural beliefs well that is a personal choice whenther you decide to climb or not.

      Re: Climbing Uluru/Ayers Rock

I for one intend to climb Uluru. I have heard stories of tourists being shamed into turning away and asked to refrain from climbing it from Aboriginal Tribesmen. I have the utmost respect for indigenous people, but I believe we are stewards of the earth and all have the right to it's use as long as we respect the land. While I am there I will look at Aboriginal art, and buy local arts and crafts. I am there to see the land and meet the people.

It is all part of the same package. you can't accept tourist's aussies yet turn them away for the very reason they are there.

        Re: Climbing Uluru/Ayers Rock

I climbed it before all this cultural stuff happened on it.

        I feel no guilt.

We actually spent a bit of time with the Aboriginal people just south of the SA/NT border. After having climbed the rock, I was amused to find out the word Aboriginals use to describe tourists is 'minga' - the word means 'ants' I'm sure they decided to use that word after observing tourists from the top of the rock.

ohh, I forgot to add, we've been on a few aboriginal tours and have really enjoyed the 'bushtucker' ones. Haven't done one at Uluru to recommend one unfortunately.

                Re: Climbing Uluru/Ayers Rock

Went there is either 95 or 96. Had a real bad guilt trip put on us so we didn't climb it. I do respect their wishes in some way but I have big regest for not conquering it then. I would stuggle to get up there now since if we do return my wife would probably not be able to do it due to health so I wouldn't do it either.

I did, however, have a wee on the rock. It's a family tradition My brother did it when he was a Doc in Alice and my Dad did it as well so I joined in.

I was fortunate enough to climb it around 1980. Back then you got a certificate stating you achieved the climb - I don't suppose you can still get them? (The week before we got there, the school group prior to us had to help in a search for a certain baby!!!!)

A long time ago and the climb was memorable. Well worth it. Just about everyone who could climb did.

Well with the previous link to Google, They must have taken pictures of sacred sites, just from 10,000K's up. Common decency should tell them to pixelate those places... Just jokin...

But we would dearly love to climb it. It is iconicly australian, what ever that means now, and I want to do it. I have been to special places on the map of australia, and want to add that one to the list. Ben made quite a good point re us as tourists. We could go on for years arguing the pros and cons, respectfulness, sacredness and the rights of all concerned etc etc. and I hope that I dont offend anyone by wanting to go up.

PS. on a seperate note re places on the map, We will be visiting the Western most point on the mainland in just over a week. Cant wait for that either. Nice shake down test for the new gear in the truck/ camper.

                            Jeff.
Reminds me of my safari in Africa. Somebody forgot the corkscrew and for several days we had to live on nothing but food and water.
