  • Any keen photographers attending GTG?

I have very recently upgraded from a compact camera (used only as a point and shoot) to a DSLR camera (Canon EOS 50D) and been off to attend a basic photography workshop to learn how to use it properly - meaning, how to use the manual features to take a bit more control of the results. As would be expected I am eagerly looking forward to taking some time on this trip to put some of my skills, well perhaps my enthusiasm, to work and was just wondering if there were any other photography enthusiasts (or even semi-professional / professional) coming on the GTG that might be happy to share some tips and or photographic opportunities (eg sunset and sunrise at Ayers Rock)????? Does anyone else have a Canon EOS??

    Cheers.

I've got an older 350D and today just bought a 17-85 EF-S lens for the trip.

I usually shoot portraits, so I'll be 'trying' to get some good landscapes.

Ok Mav - are you an enthusiast or on the professional spectrum? I might be picking your brains now......

D4D - I am hoping for some great landscape shots too. I mostly enjoy taking pics of nature (birds, flowers, animals, and our great country).

I will probably bring along my compact to make sure I also get momentos of my trip (you know, taking photos through the windshield of the Prado in front of you...)

Very much the enthusiast, wish I could make a living off of it but that is not going to happen in the short term.

This is a Kite I shot recently:

Yay for Canons. Perhaps we might even speak the same language???

Whoa Mav - that is a nice lot of equiptment!! I only have the 18-200mm lens at this stage but desperately want a macro lens and then a telescopic lens too (might have to look over your Sigma). I have a very bad photo of a tree kangaroo from our Queensland trip that was "the final straw that broke the camels back" for me in finally moving up the scale! Glenn has heaps of lenes but for older model film cameras and don't fit our new camera...
I am pinching his Manfotto tripod though - he uses it for bird watching and usually carries it on his shoulder but has been nice enough to put a shoulder strap on it for me

I have a monopod for my Sigma cause it is a BIG lens. However having said that my prize lens is going to be my Canon 300 f2.8L, 400 f2.8L, or 500 f4L mm prime lens. I like the idea of using the 300mm along with a 2X TC which would effectively give me a 600mm lens with little image quality degredation and let me keep the weight down for hand holding. But I will readily admit that the 400mm is a definite draw card too.

If only I'd have known Deb... I could have made the whole trip a tax deduction 8) I'm a freelance photographer and I teach photography. Oh well, maybe next GTG

If you have the space... (storage while on the trip that is) I would suggest shooting RAW+JPG so that you can maximise your images once you get back from the trip and learn how to process a RAW file. (RAW files take up a fair bit more space than jpgs unfortunately).

                      A tip if I may...
If you are shooting in JPG capture mode have a look into the 'Picture Styles' your camera has. (not to be confused with the 'Picture Modes' on the modes dial of the camera)
                      http://www.canon.co.jp/imaging/pictu...yle/index.html
Picture styles are great for fine tuning the colour, contrast saturation etc of an image. Have a read in the instruction book and it'll give you more info.

REMEMBER TO TURN THE PICTURE STYLE BACK TO 'STANDARD' WHEN YOU FINISH SHOOTING.

If you've got any questions I'm happy to answer them...
                      Cheers, Leon

He he he... Zowie and I were keen to come to this GTG but once we knew for sure Lorelai was on the way we just knew that it was going to be to close to call.
She's got pretty good neck/head control for 13 weeks but I think we'll leave it at beach runs and slow forestry tracks till she's a bit older

Now Ben (FlyNdrive) .... about your next trip to AUS... The Cape did I hear you say

Re: Any keen photographers attending GTG?

I would love to learn more about the digital trickery available.

First "good" camera was a Canon 35mm eos750.
then the first digital was a compact all in one thing that cost a heap, worked well, untill it went for a swim at Lane Poole reserve....
Insurance helped pay for a Canon eos350D. It came with the twin lens pack, so 18-55mm and 75-300mm with a few filters.
Good thing about that deal is that the old lenses still work on the new one, (motor in the lens?)

Used to like action photography like car and bike racing. But have never really got into colours and lanscapes etc. Thats what I want to get the hang of.
My sister had her own dark room in the old laundry and had a few Balck and Whites on show back in the day.
Still got dads old Minolta A5 that I used to take snaps at Bathurst back in the Group C days......

                            Jeff.
Reminds me of my safari in Africa. Somebody forgot the corkscrew and for several days we had to live on nothing but food and water.

Yep, any EF lens will fit on any EOS body. (just don't put an EF-s lens on a film or full-frame digital camera.)
