I spoke to my local ARB store today as my winch bar is getting fitted as we speak. They said they have been trying to get an answer out of head office on the state of the OEM Tie down Points and still dont have an answer. The 120 Bar had recovery points built into them, however ARB didn't incorporate these into the 150 bars. If ARB has an answer when I pick up the car this afternoon ill let you know.

          Re: Minimum Vehicle Preperation Requirements

          All good points..

I have a TJM delux winch bar (alloy) and they way it is mounted it takes away your option to mount the rated recovery points to the chasis(swing the radiator mod). The mounting bracket completely bolts over the area where the recovery points would be fitted.

I have seen another setup on prado point where another person mounted two rated tow hooks to the underside of his bull bar.

          Any comments?

          Regards

            Re: Minimum Vehicle Preperation Requirements

            Hi

I had my bar fitted today to our 150 and there aren't any tabs, loops or holes for recovery. The bar and bash plates go around the original Toyota "tow hooks" the ARB guy said that the known manufacturers don't have "rated recovery points" yet. He did mention that the original points were very solid and with a equalising strap should do the job. The concern is not winch recoveries or towing, rather savage use of snatch straps, nothing new there though.

            Regards, Richo.

Here are the photos of the bar, bash plates and the tow point.

Under the ARB sticker is the left tow point.

You can see the bash plates front and side around the tow point.

                        Hi All,

I did speak to ARB a few days ago regarding the issue of Recovery points and the ARB Deluxe bar.
They have advised me today that my request has gone to the National Manager for a written reply.

As soon as I get this, I will post his repsonse.

                          Hi Stuart

May I propose that the fact that points aren't on the new bars for the 150 that the answer will be "tow points" not recovery points. The other point to consider is that if the bar is fitted with air bags then the crumple mounts would preclude snatch recoveries.

                          Regards, Richo.

                            Hi Richo,

This is why I have taken this step - to get a clear answer from them.
There have been too many members guessing, like you.

If I need to modify (drill large holes and angle grind others eg bash plate) my Prado to fit an aftermarket recovery point, then I will withdraw from the GTG.

My vehicle is being setup as a ULR (Ultra Long Range) tourer. That is why I have fitted a 160L main Tank.
Not for Hard 4wd trips, like Watagans/West Wallsend trip on the GTG.

We all need to know for our own benefit.

I don't believe this to be correct however have a go at an explanation anyway

                                Re: Minimum Vehicle Preperation Requirements

Would having a winch be a suitable substitute for a front recovery point.

When picking up the car from ARB after getting the bar fitted, I was speaking to ARB about front recovery points, and the comment they made was "You dont need them now you have a winch, instead of getting someone to snatch you out if your bogged/stuck, just use the winch instead, thats what it is designed for.

With this in mind, they seem to believe that the need for a front recovery point for snatching is redundant. Thoughts?
