Just wondering if anyone's had time to give any more serious but not so secret thought to a highly likely route for the trip down. My suggestion was Lightning Ridge, Darling River Run, Mungo NP, Lake Victoria, Bendelby. Now that our hosts know we're coming in droves under the protection of Pradopoint Fairy dust, what other dust are we planning on mixing it up with? Likewise what about a route back home? Given our final night location, I'm leaning towards heading home by hugging the coastline lakes, bays, NP's, small towns, etc as far as Sydney before bolting north. Might take the ferry from Queenscliff to Sorrento as part of that. Come on team whet my appetite!

Our internal planning-ahead clocks must be in sync BobSled. I still haven't sat down and started any planning, though I have recently borrowed a bunch of books from the library on Flinders Ranges and other areas we might be visiting. I haven't opened them yet though...

          Hey Matt

"Borrowed books" ?? WTF!! A technophile like you with paper copies, I don't beleive what the world is coming to. Next thing we know you will be ditching the iPhone, Garmin and getting paper maps

See ya on the tracks, Richo.

I spose it all just depending on peoples timesframes. I guessing 3weeks in total,.... 1 week to get there, a week on tour and a week to get back.
Perhaps get some ideas together for your own route preferences, then have a meet up by the middle of the year to discuss, we can then decide on a route together. Still plenty of time to peruse many HEMA Maps and fancy i-Phone apps.

            cheers

And at the 4x4 Show in March, I'll be coming out with an armful of Hema's paper maps for the journey.

When it comes to 'big' navigation, a bunch of blokes standing around an iPhone gets a bit too cosy. That's why they invented paper maps and bonnets .

But if we all smell the same we won't notice, and the choice of camp sites at the GTG will be unlimited

Luv it, can just imagine taking turns with our fingers on ya iPhone LFaR.

Am still at 2 minds about getting an iPad, although that's where things are at atm. I came close to buying one the other day.
There's plenty of options for Tablets running the Android system, but the only real option here is OziExplorer.
Apple does have the market currently for Apps and electronic mapping.
I used MotionX a bit over a year ago down on the Hawkesbury River and even on the waterways, the Marine Navigation was excellent. Not a bad App at all for $2. Combine that with the HEMA or VMS App. and you should definitely know where you're going.

                      cheers

                                Hi Sam,

Copy away... I've booked 20-Sep to 15-Oct, inclusive. It helps if I don't have a full week of work to contend with, either side of the adventure .
