Just one for people to look at on the website, go to Itinerary and follow the link to the Transit leg and the Border Track, have a look at the attched video of a Hilux heading up a dune on the Border Track.

Regarding this: The committee needs to meet again to discuss your application AJ. Trish and DJ are definitely in, it's just whether or not we allow you to show up given how much trouble you are. I guess it will all depend on how many scrub bars and side steps you wish to donate to committee members.... This will probably be the deciding factor.
On another note, if you youtube Border Track, there are many, many more vids of the mud holes etc. I chose a few of the tame ones so as not to scare you all off!
Iantz trust me AJ will be there. I've seen him in action not fixing his problems just everyone elses. If Trish kicks you out you can drive mine that means I can maintain more "hydration" if you know what I mean.

What are the options for towing a trailer on section 2 without a winch?
Not questioning the requirement, just trying to assess the options and the justification for getting a winch.
Please present this post to SWMBO as an official requirement that you fit a winch. If she does not understand then explain this post is like a doctors certificate and means she must comply.
Officially unofficially on behalf of the GTG2012 committee.

Hi Graeme, ignore MLC and listen to me. When we transit through Ngarkat; at this stage we are planning 2 options, one all the way along the Border Track, and second down the centre track and then onto the border track. Both tracks are similar only the dunes on the first section of the border track are much larger. when I refer to the Border track from now on I am refering to the one way section at the start that those doing the centre track will miss.
The likely scenario for trailers on the first section of the border track is that they will almost certainly not make it, therefore recoveries are almost a given, snatching is going to be problematic at best, maxtrax are always an option but we made a winch mandatory as that may be the safest and most practical way, but it all depends on the circumstances on the day.
Having a winch doesn't gaurantee you will be able to do the border track with a trailer, for example, a person with a 1kz manual would be wasting their time even trying, you are going to need horsepower as well, you are also going to need to be willing to use all the horsepower you have. Likewise if your camper trailer is really heavy, such as a Kimberly, we would suggest that you take the centre track as you don't stand a chance of getting over the dunes. And of course the logistics say that we simply cant take 20 or 30 vehicles with campers down the Border Track if every one of those needs to be recovered; possibly on more than one occasion.
So to sum up, for a trailer down the Border Track section a winch is mandatory, you will also require a D4D or V6, or possibly a 1kz with chip and exhaust running a high tune, a modestly weighted camper trailer, experience towing over dunes, confidence in your ability in sand and dunes, a wiilingness to wring the neck out of your Prado, and be fit enough to do some serious digging if things go really pear shaped and you bury yourself big time.
The centre track will still provide good fun for those with all of the above, it may still provide a challenge for those with low power and experience, but by all means use it as an excuse to fit a winch. We expect the majority of people with CT's to take the centre track option.
Hope that helps.
Cheers Andrew

Awesome!! Can we say that's a given?? I've been trying to work out how to get to do more of the driving ... this is the perfect solution ... it's win-win!

Trish, AJ was waffling again. I hope you are monitoring his internet usage.
