  • So are many people taking a chainsaw? We are planning to do some camp oven cooking at Bendleby as I believe they supply firewood. Can one of the committee members confirm this?
We are not taking a camper trailer and looking at all the options for cutting down on gear and weight
    Cheers Phil

So I just finished reading the website and it does say that chainsaws are not allowed to be used whilst in their camping area. We will have to keep it in the car whilst there. So just wondering about the other spots, ie access to suitable wood etc.
        Any comments appreciated
        Cheers

        • Fourby. Bendleby supply all the wood you need. We will be taking a chainsaw and I suspect Dave (sapradogxl) may as well.

I wouldn't worry about a chainsaw, firewood is supplied at Bendleby, you wouldn't be allowed to use one for firewood in Ngarkat and there is nothing to cut down at Beachport! In the unlikely scenario that a tree has fallen over a track it is likely to be on a small tree that could easily be moved by hand or cut up with a pruning saw (what I carry)

One of the details yet to be finalised is firewood but the plan is for me to arrange a firewood supply in Loxton and if everyone can throw a few pieces in the vehicle we should be able to carry plenty of wood for Red Bluff and Beachport.

I won't organise this until the last minute though as high fire danger conditions at the start of October are possible although unlikely.

In the event of extreme fire danger (even less likely but still possible) Ngarkat will be a no go zone and we will go with "plan B" 40 vehicles and 100+ people down a dead end track to a camp spot in the mallee on an extreme fire danger day would be a big mistake, hopefully the weather gods look after us

            Cheers Andrew

            • I was just wondering why you'd need a chainsaw if they supply the firewood anyway!
I just use a trusty axe.

                Thanks Rob,
One less thing to worry about, up here in the hills I always take one, but trying to cut down as much as possible, as space is a concern
                Cheers

According to that link they wont be racing it till next year. But it might make things a little more interesting.

                    Whitey,
Fallen trees are always a concern up here when out and about, an im guessing the trees are a bit bigger here than darwin, so I normally always have one with spare fuel, bar oil and sharpener! I also carry an axe for splitting and back up. I am pretty unfamiliar with the landscape where we are going so I figured I would ask the question.
I have come across many fallen trees in my travels some of which would take hours and hours to deal with without a chainsaw on board.
                    Cheers
                    Phil

I push the bastards over with my bullbar or snatch them down and then pull them into the campfire. After all, isn't that what the Prado is for?
