  • Genuine or non genuine Accessories

    Hi Everyone,

Am due to pick up our new 150 this month, goodbye to our trusty cruiser.

We are thinking to kit it out with genuine accessories, does anyone have an opinion on this, should I go for non genuine.
These are the accessories I am contemplating:
    Cargo Barrier
    Aluminium bullbar
    Rubber mats throughout
    Headlight protectors
    Bonnet protector
    Any advice appreciated;

    Cheers
    Phil

Re: Genuine or non genuine Accessories

if it was me I would personally steer clear of genuine Toyota on a lot of things.

I would look after market on the cargo barrier, would hit up ARB for a real bullbar (not a aluminium bumper that will bend into the radiator when near a roo), would look at Sand Grabber mats for the floors (probably similar coin to what Toyota want full price) Head light protectors and bonnet protector are fine.

For spares I would get geniune hoses and belts and depending on the mood would most likely be genuine on filters BUT would be pretty happy with non genuine filters as well.

The genuine toyota alloy bar looks crap. Don't do it. You will hate yourself for it.

Thanks for the reply Schaffer, some good advice there, still got 10 days before delivery so some serious decisions to make.

For what its worth, you can get an ARB colour coded deluxe winch bar with winch and fogs for around the same price as the Yota bar. Search Yota bars and I'm sure you will find heaps of totally wrecked genuine bars (aluminum) that have failed badly at seeing a roo while doing 20km. Its a pretty simple choice really.

Well make sure you descide away from the ugly Dame Edna alloy bar that Toyota will try to serve up to you.

To give you an idea of what "it" looks like

So with this you too can look like:

What kind of thongs are you wearing? I've done close to 10,000kms and the rubber mats are like new. I've taken the prado out for muddy trips. When I come home, it as as simple as taking the rubber mats out, hosing them down and letting them dry for 5minutes while you vac what the mats missed - which was barely anything! Steer clear from carpet mats though, those take ages to clean, and you better get the garbage bags out if you're kicking up some mud.

What do you mean 'what type of thong' Is there more than one type?

Nothing finer than a 'double plug dragon'

i have a set i wear to work and them my 'going out' set

Although I think it might be a little bit of workshop contaminants that have helped the wear but im still using them ive just overlayed a better set from my last vehicle straight over the top of the genuine ones. I am surprised at the level of wear so quickly though

I think you just answered your own question. Thongs with workshop contaminants!!! I actually had a set of toyota rubber mats that I used for a good 6-7years (transferring from one car to another every year) before I sold them off with a car. Apart from the apparent fade, they were in excellent condition. I'm expecting similar out of these ones. Anyway, why are you wearing thongs in an environment where there are contaminants that eat through rubber???

They started off as full covered steel capped boots, dam those contaminants!!!!!

There's a bloke that sells bonnet protectors, weathershields, headlight guards and rear dust deflectors for all Tojo models. The bonnet protector stops a lot of the stones impacting along the leading edge of the bonnet. Can't remember his name but he works out of a unit right on the bend on Thurso Road Myaree, behind Titan Ford.

I think you can google and he comes up with an ebay sellers address too.

I have about 5 bonnet chips in 40,000 klms and 10,000klms of those have been dirt roads and I don't have a bonnet protector. The mounts for the bonnet protectors would have done more damage than the stone chips.

I've got a bonnet protector with no damage at all on the bonnet and I would say that if I removed the mount pads there would be no visible damage underneath either.
