  • Which one to keep

    An interesting but honest dilemma...
when we bought our 2008 Prado GXL diesel, we gave our 1999 Prado Grande petrol to our daughter in law.We are upgrading again and here is the question:-
there is a $30K difference in value between the 2008 and the 1999.
Is the 2008 Diesel worth that much difference given that the Grande petrol is only 'mum's taxi' and max work is from Brisbane to Nambour to visit family.
Or is the Grande 'good enough' for the 'burbs?
I am not 'mean spirited' but $30K is a lot of dough!!!!

? Not sure I understood the question. I've read it several times now and I'm still confused.

So you're upgrading and you want to know which would make a better trade in?

Re: Is the Grande good enough for the burbs?
If there's no underlying mechanical issues due to its age, there really isn't much that could be holding it back from the burbs unless its the cost of petrol

Willade - apologies for the confusion.
Yes we are upgrading so we have our 2008 GXL and the previous 1999 Grande.
The kids are unsure which to keep. It is now a little more complicated...
Our son has the Grande and we wanted him to upgrade to the GXL. Since it is just his wife's 'mum's taxi', he thinks the diesel might not be suited to the 'burbs. He hasn't bought his boat yet and doesn't go off-road.
Our daughter has a horse and now wants the Grande - but we wanted advice if a 1999 Grande with 120,000kms has enough life left in it to keep or should we be off-loading it asap?
I guess that is the gist of my quandry.
Do you want another govat advice ... It will be appreciated.

The 3.4V6 is a solid engine. At 120,000KM it is only just getting warn in. There are plenty of cases of the 3.4 going to 400,000KM if well maintained. The 4 speed automatic transmission is taken from the 80 series so its over engineered for the lighter 90 series.

And the D4D is fine as a mum's Taxi, I see plenty of them

          Re: Which one to keep

All I can say is your kids are very lucky !

Aside from that, the 2008 GXL diesel is a more recent car so support/parts will be more assured. And it'll tow his boat fine.
Unless you're paying the maintenance for them as well, the 90 is going to become more expensive for them to maintain over time. However weigh that against cost of trading it in on something more recent, may as well keep it till it dies.
Notwithstanding diesel maintenance costs are a bit higher, 120 D-4D diesel is still the current motor used in the 150 ( almost ) so parts shouldn't be a problem
I don't see much difference around town between a latest generation diesel and previous generation petrol engine. ( well you should know because you've owned them both )

I'd keep them both, because they are a known quantity, and I hope the the kids show thier gratitude for having such generous parents.
          Cheers, Wayne

If it is only 'mum's taxi' there appears to be grand children.

For me the simple question would be "which vehicle is safest for my grandchildren"?

            1999 Prado is 3 Star safety rating http://www.howsafeisyourcar.com.au/1999 ... ser-Prado/

            2008 Praado is 4 Star http://www.howsafeisyourcar.com.au/1999 ... ser-Prado/

Maybe trade them both in on a newer 5 star safety rated vehicle that is suitable for use as mum's taxi around the 'burbs.
155 SX with dual battery and Polyairs in the rear springs..
