Resale value of a Prado

Hi all, I am hoping you all can help me. I'm moving to Australia from the US for 2 years and will be living in the Northern Territory (Katherine). We want to buy a new Prado when we arrive next week, but I'm unsure of what will be able to get for a 2012 Prado when we move back to the states in 2014. Anyone have any experience selling a reasonably new Prado. Would we be better off buying a Prado that's a few years old in order to avoid depreciation?

Any feedback or advice would be greatly appreciated.

Depending on your lease structure you'll be lucky in 2 years, usually 3 you're good.

If here for only two years, go second-hand at least. Resale value will be a lot better.

Not so sure about that. My 2008 GXL didn't move in price for around 3 yrs. Now its starting to dive. Are the 150's holding up like that? I'm not sure - but a 2yr old one would be starting to drop now I suspect.

Wouldn't buy new unless you can get a lease for it under $57k to avoid LCT (would be a challenge but there are those than claim to do it). If you can get one new for $57K then go for it, otherwise look for a one or two year old second-hand one for about that price.

Location wise the pick would be a stock 2nd hand 3.0l turbo diesel with around 40,000k and add a bull bar, driving lights and all terrain tyres and enjoy the next 2 yrs.

I would just shop around for a great price on a NEW one as there are still second hand 2011 Prados advertised for more than what i paid for mine brand new and they have PLENTY of km's on them!!
You may lose $5 or 10k but that's bugger all in the scheme of things!
Plus if there is a Toyota dealer close you get fixed priced servicing for 3 years!

The Katherine dealer is known for better priceing compared to the Darwin dealer.........a few people i know will only but new off of Katherine toyota as they will match most southern prices as the Darwin guys don't give a toss

If you buy one make sure it is a diesel. Current 3 year year old GXL's manuals are not far off what they were new. I have seen some GX's advertised at or above their original price!

Diesel 4wds up here will always retain their re-sale over the petrol variant.........
