  • 90 series?

    Hi all

I'm trying to help out my brother in law. He has about $15k to spend on a Prado! He likes them all but his fav is a 120 series but he probably will struggle getting one for that amount. Anyone out there know anyone selling there 90 series for this amount?
    Hit me up

    Cheers
    Pat

    Hi Pat,
Have you tried the usual car sites (carsales, carsguide, drive, ebay)? Petrol 90 series should not be hard to find in the <$15k price bracket.

There is an abundance of V6 petrols for sale on carsales,

Diesel 90s are rather scarce though

Hi Pat, can give you a little help there I think. I bought my first prado 6 months ago after much umming and ahhing about models. I got a 97' Vx Grande with 230,000 on the clock for $10,900. Took me a while to find just the right one as most 90 series have 200 - 300,000 ks on em by now. Also spent the time hunting for one that had one owner, full service history and hadn't been off road.

When I started hunting the cheapest 120 series I could find was a 04' Gx prado (a base model) so no extras at all. That was $19,500.
By and large prados were going for about $22,000 to 35,000.

Given your in-laws budget I would either wait and work up some more cash to buy a 120 series or take some time and hunt through the many 90 and 95 series on the market to find a tip top example like the one I found. Then spend the extra dough on some goodies to play with.
Imo the 90 series are just as capable as the later models with the only disadvantage being that there is more worn out and abused ones on the market. Few things to watch for on 90 series if thats what he buys is the duel fuel tanks have one pump each and owners that have never or rarely used them can mean that the pump seals and electrical contacts can have perished from un-use, also have a peek at the suspension mount rubbers to see if any are perished (an indicator of rough treatment and neglect). Also the usual things when buying second hand such as smoke, oil drips, loud ratlles, g/box shudder and such.
Also be wary of early model diesel motors, have been told by my mechanic of 35years that he treated a few early ones in the 90s for warped heads but havn't heard of anyone on here who has had that problem.

      Good hunting!
97' Prado VX Grande Emerald/Silver, 3.4L, auto, Bilstein shocks/ Dobinsons coils 2'' lift, breathers on everything, snorkel, Maxxis Bighorns. Coming before Summer, Uniden uhf, spotties and with luck a winch bar.

        Hey

Not sure about Queensland, but we just picked up a 1997 Prado VX Grande with 171k kms for $11000 in Sydney. Runs very very well, very happy to have moved up to a Prado.
It's a Petrol engine by the way.

Good luck with finding one! - we got ours from carsales dot com dot au.

if you do your hunting you should be able to get a decent rig for that.

accessories are cheap in comparison to repairs, focus on condition of paint and service history

i would expect a patient man could get a good condition v6 auto grande around a 00 for that sort of cash.

to put it in perspective, mine was mint condition all around, it had 180,000k and was 14 private sale, that was over two years ago now. my friend just bought a mint condition manual v6 gxl 01 model with 170,000ks at a dealer inc on roads for 15
