A Toyota dealer told me that the next batch of Landcruisers will be all diesel, no petrol model available. I assume then that in future years there will only be diesel Prados available.
There was never any mention about this to me from my dealer, all he said about the petrol was that it was a lot easier and quicker to get a hold of.

I can't see there being no place in the market for the petrol. Even though they're selling more diesels, there will always be buyers for the petrol, what do all the soccer mums buy?

Crammy, I wasn't trying to infer the CNS and TSV dealers were crook, they just didn't have Prados in stock to cut a decent deal. With waiting lists at the time stretching to 6 months they had all the bargaining power. Shame I didn't want a Pajero as Mitsu had giveaway deals going but I hate the shape. I too purchased off the Toyota fleet contract.

I am not a diesel fan so didnt even consider it to be honest, ours is an older model so it wouldnt have been the D4D anyway. But on resale the diesels were around 5k more, when you consider the hassles to me its not enough of a resale increase to warrant it. I had also experienced the D4D in my old mans Lux and I like my power too much to live with one.

Hi StormyKnight, L2 was the lowest I could shift down to in the auto, LR would have been overkill for this particular hill.
Are you saying it won't let you select first gear in high range?

Just curious as I have a 90 series & you can with that one.

Not stirring boof but what hassles would they be? Dirty diesel bowsers??

I did a rough calc on fuel consumption using toyotas figures, fuel/diesel prices up here and the amount of kms I do and I would save $1200 a year just in fuel. The extra cost of the diesel premium would be payed off in 12 months (Allbeit if the petrol and diesel gap doesn't widen) add to that resale values as you state and it looks quite attractive to me...

I calculated the service costs from toyotas cost schedule and the diesel works out $106 dearer per year to service over 5 years. Oh and in QLD rego is cheaper on the diesel because it only has 4 cylinders!

Extra range, better resale and a yearly saving of around $1200 after the first year... I rekon I could handle filliing up at a dirty diesel bowser 12 times a year!

Having said all that I'll probably change my mind when I drive the petrol in 2 weeks time

              Hey Richard,

From my test drive it appeared that the lowest selectable position on the auto was L2. I'm not sure if it can be locked into 1st gear as I didn't get that far into it.

fuel consumption might be slightly higher when the vehicle is new due to the motor being tighter. Once it is broken in it should improve.

True, but you'd expect that of the petrol too... So I guess it's all relative.

I have a 2007 auto. To get to First, take the stick down to L2 (the green light shows on the right of the L2 sign), then move the stick to the left. The green light on the left of the L2 sign should light up. It's a bit the same with 4th & 5th and not very user-friendly. Another one of those Japanese design idiosyncrasies, I think. I played around with using the gears 'manually' when I was at Rover Park a few weeks ago and after a couple of goes I found the shifting easy and intuitive. Much more fun then just staying in auto.

Hey Steve I agree the savings look good, by hassles I mean the extra servicing, they need to be serviced more often which is a pita for me. I have to swap cars with the wife or stuff around getting loan cars and then changing baby seats etc over. I also dont like the power of a diesel maybe I am just a revhead but I like to have some power under foot.(Even the V6 feels sluggish under foot after the Hilux) Also as they get older servicing and parts failure becomes quite a bit dearer, and because I dont buy new and resell every 3 yrs or so its something I have to take into account.

The other big one for me is seeing an expensive new car leaving smoke behind it again just a personal thing for me. My old man was very impressed with the D4D however when we were on a trip and I had to overtake after him I had to let him pass fully first to avoid running him over. The savings at the bowser were good but I am happy to pay the extra to have a vehicle I enjoy driving.

Second gear low for manuals, 1st low for autos is the go. Unless you have a Patrol..they don't have low range..it's medium range and high range.

IMO you can't go past an auto off road, having many of both over the years, auto wins every time. Auto is point and shoot no stalling the engine in difficult sections, or shopping centres. The Auto in D will choose the correct gear for you up hills too.

Think about it how many competition boys run manuals in rock crawling.
