  • Anything I should know... Buying a 2009 D4D

    As the title says...
I'm looking at moving the 90 on (just as its near to perfect) and am looking at a 120 2009 D4D Auto in NSW.

Is there anything I should look for when I'm checking it out as I'll have to make the decision to purchase it the first time I see it.

    Thanks in advance.
    Cheers, Leon

Make sure it has an engine in it

Jokes aside, I got an 07 GXL D4D, I looked it over with a fine tooth comb and didn't find anything wrong with it. 12 months later it's still perfect.

The thing I'd check out first however are all the underbody guards for the radiator, diff etc they are standard ex toyota. See if they have any dents or chunks missing as they may reveal the car has had a hard life. Mine were like new and had a few dints after my last 4wd trip. Then it was off to panel beater who replaced themall for me with an insurance claim I made.

    Cheers,

Apart from the usual signs of use, abuse and wear the only things to consider are the injectors/fuel pump so check service history and if possible the service reports to see if and when the filters have been changed. Cold cold start if you can to hear for any knock beyond the usual. Other than that I can't think of anything. We moved into an auto D4D from a manual 90 series diesel and the only thing (in my opinion) you have to do is tyres and lift to get it to the ability of the 90 off road (Send your complaints to ...). Is it a private sale? If a dealer sale then you may be able to get some form of warranty and you may be able to get them to do a full service changing filters. If it has all the electronic gizmos (opt pack in the GXL) check they all work.

        Thanks guys,
The knock seems to be the only thing people are mentioning when I ask around.

        Michael... strange question.
Is there anything you miss from your 90 or isn't done as well on the 120?
I reckon I'm going to miss the fact you can't choose which fuel tank to run off.
        Anything else like that?
        Cheers, Leon

also don't worry about the sub tank they work differently, you don't have to worry about it at all, much better than the sub tank stealing all your petrol

Snags, I reckon with your driving style your first mod will be a rear lockka, also remove the factory steps for some steel sliders. Check for the usual things underneath to see how much offroad work its done.

                  Cheers

It's definitely been off road. The only thing it will need is those things Stewy... has most of what I have on the 90 already
I'll miss the 90... still think the 90 is a superior off road vehicle but the towing duties are getting more and more...
Sam, I use the tank strategically (one way to describe it) I use the sub tank for transit days and the main for off-road so that I always know I can get back with what's left in the sub tank.
Guess it won't be such an issue with a diesel though.
                        Cheers, Leon

Leon, I don't think so or at least nothing that sticks in memory now. It is a different drive but nothing untoward. Nicer on the open road despite having the same basic layout and drivetrain but that may just be the D4D and auto box. A standard 90 has its naughty bits higher than a standard 120 which came as a surprise hence my comment about the lift. The rear space is different too and resulted in us shifting things around. Not worse just different. The plus side of our 120 is the auto and electronic goodies. I have walked the 120 through places the 90 wouldn't have made without a LOT more momentum and that is a good thing for man and beast. Vision from the driver's seat is better in the 90 but that could just be sentimental rambling. The 120 is a plusher machine and doesn't have the 90's off road looks (in my opinion). When we upgraded it was because the 90 was needing some work, suspension, tyres, and a few other bits and as a daily driver it needed a refresh after 6 years. I would have kept it if I could have convinced the wife to drive something else on a daily basis but that was a lost cause. Probably will feel the same about the 120 in a couple of years time when the next changeover comes up. The dual tanks are easy to get used to as is the gauge and how it works.

Not unhappy with the 120 at all.
