chrome flaking around the wheels... anyone seen this

Howdy all,

I was looking at my potential purchase 08 Prado Grande yesterday at a brisbane dealer and upon my semi-thorough inspection, the first thing that took my eye was the electronic rust protection module (dealer said owners were paranoid - yet lived in west brisbane) upon my walk around I then noticed the right side rim was completely devoid of the chrome plating around the air valve... and all four wheels had started to bubble and flake in places

I was wondering if anyone had seen this type of thing on a prado rim before - my old man said it was likely a sign of some beach work...?

My Prado is 2004 and has 200,000kms on it and the wheels were doing the same think, bubbling and peeling off so I sandblasted and painted them.
My car has always lived in central vic and I'm 99% sure it's never been on the beach.
It may just be the quality of the rims from factory but mine are also 4 years older than yours, beach work may have sped up the process.

Common problem, sandblast and powdercoat fixes it, about $400 all up.

i recently brought a 2004 Prado, same problem on rims, owner said he had a set replaced under warranty from Toyota when it was new, but now too late to do it again obviously.

im not too fussed about it, normally the rims are covered in red dust anyway
