I've just signed for a Prado GXL D4D. I've bought cars new before, and all have had no problem with paying the balance with a bank cheque, but this particular dealer claims bank cheques still require 5 days to clear and so I wouldn't be able to pay for and pick up the Prado on the same day. Is this a bit suss? It's a major dealer in Sydney, but I'm just a bit worried about handing over a large chunk of cash and not driving away with the Prado.

Cold hard cash. Unless someone comes calling in the middle of the night before you get to the bank.
Bank cheques can be reported lost or stolen which makes them worthless immediately.
The safest way to get paid is meet the person at the bank (bank hours obviously) and put that cash in your account straight away.
Bank transfer is a good way to get paid too, but takes time to clear.
