  • Best time to buy new VX/GXL Diesel 150

Interested to find out what were people's experience when buying a new 150. Did the time of year make a significant difference in prices, including any regular price hikes?

Located in outer Sydney with numerous dealerships around so there "should be" plenty of competition.

I'd imagine after the new year they would be reducing 2012 plated vehicles to clear stock! What about prior to or after the end-of-financial year, is that a better time to haggle on price/options?

The other unknown for me is whether the demand for 150's out there is that great that I'm basically buggered. Place an order, wait 3-6 months and pay the asking price!!

The best time will probably be about a week after you buy the new car. That's when you'll see heaps of cars being sold for much less than what you paid. Well, that's how it always seems to happen for me.

Got a good deal when I signed on the dotted line on Dec 31st. Must have got someone over the line for an annual sales bonus.

I'm also told that the end of January is a good time to buy - not many sales because of Christmas/New year.

Yeah, Dec/Jan would make sense as you say it's shorter time span for sales to meet their quota so they should be keen to make a low quid rather than no quid. If trucks are running off the production line in Japan at the same rate this could also leave dealerships temporarily with unloved stock they want moved.

Heading into enemy territory over the next few weeks to start negotiations.

In my experience the EOFY quota equals better deals than end of calendar year if you can wait another six months. You can play dealers off against each other but if you find someone who's desperate for a sale then hit them with the lowest price you've seen on here but watch out for things like three months rego.

In my experience the end of January as this is the slowest sales period and you can usually pick up a previous year plated model.

Also I know that you can get within $500.00 of the best fleet deal buying retail at this time. I got my 150 GXL petrol for $58'000 drive away in January 2010.

If buying just after new year but plated previous year they would want to be giving a good deal as the vehicle is technically a year old already. Thats definately what they will be telling you when you try and trade it in at a later date. I reckon you get a better deal at the end of financial year but again if there is a wait/back order then they might not be too willing to give a big discount as they are selling so well anyway. I never see them advertise deals on prado's, always seems to be hilux's, corolla's, yaris but never the prado or the 200 series..Just what I have noticed myself.......Cheers Steve

Totally agree Steve, i have been watching for deals for a while now and haven't seen one for a Prado , ended up signing on the dotted line for a diesel 150 GXL for $62500 drive away , they may be cheaper next year but i am happy with that price

Tend to also agree with Mickmac42, always the way, we buy some thing then all of a sudden you see it on special some where, wether its a car, fridge, ipad what ever lol, but thats life. Buy it and enjoy it either way. Never get your money back on things anyway unless its a GTHO falcon or the like lol........Cheers Steve

My local Toyota dealer has 9 new Prados in stock, come Jan I reckon they will be offering deals since they are all 2012 plated.

Planning to keep the 150 for a min of 5 years or more Steve so an extra one on the plate won't hurt resale too much.

You might be right about Toyota more focussed on flogging the lower end of the brand as one Sydney dealership I went to today only had one 200 series and a Hilux on the lot along with 30 or so Corolla's, Yaris etc. I commented in passing to a salesman they were short on 4wd's and he said they didn't want $70k to $120k vehicles sitting on the lot. I told him the Mayans got it wrong! Guess what, if they ain't bothered to fly the flag on their entire fleet so customers can at least sit in, smell, touch, test drive and ask questions about the vehicle they are keen on buying then neither am I bothered to give them any money.

Sounds like the Dealer in Melb. has cornered the market in Prado's.

Yes Tony I agree. I went to Penrith Toyota today just for a squiz around and not one prado in sight ?? certainly wernt any on the front lot unless some one was already test driving. They did have the new dual cab cruiser there and heaps of corolla's yaris etc. I know it does cost them for every day they have a car sitting on their lot but there wouldnt be to many people who buy one with our first planting there backside in one to check it out and take for a test drive I wouldnt think ???? .......Cheers Steve

And 7 out of 9 are diesels too. It is Brighton Toyota though who claim to be Australia's largest Toyota Dealership, they have 6 Landcruisers and 2 FJ's on the lot at the moment as well.

That's funny Sci Fleet in Brisbane have a couple of courtesy Buses running around with big stickers across it saying they are Australia's largest Toyota dealer!!

What can I say, it's on their website banner :-)

                              http://www.brightontoyota.com.au/index.php/about-us

I guess the real question is how many Prados do Sci Fleet have on their lots right now?

ETA: Found Sci Fleet's website and the blurb says "largest selling Toyota Dealership in Australia" and they do have multiple outlets so perhaps it's the amount of vehicles sold across all outlets that gives them that title.
