Iv'e started to hear people refer to these engines like the ZD30's in the nissan patrol's ?? I wouldnt say they are that bad when you compare the amount of prados with the D4D engine in them and the amount having issues but its certainly some thing to be wary of. Iv'e heard of injectors having to be replaced at around the 130k mark which isn't a cheap job (few grands worth) so possibly the lower the klms the better for yourself and your pocket but some times your limited depending on where you live and PLEASE dont just go by photo's on the car sales add, and then get a lemon transported to your house. You really really need to inspect for yourself or get some one with plenty of knowledge to do it for you. I was buying a 80 series cruiser a couple of years ago and thank got I decided to go to melbourne (Im in Sydney) and check it out for myself, it was a piece of shit, looked great on the carsales website and talking to the bloke, yeah mate nearly like new, felt like smacking him one when I got there needless to say I flew back home with my mechanic mate ($800) round trip on a long weekend............Cheers Steve
yeah when looking for my Prado 120 i looked at a few D4D's but ended up going with a low km 1KZ-TE strickly for the reliability and ease of maintainence. Booked her in for a DP chip and 3 inch exhaust to get the extra torque it is lacking. After owning a 76 series with a 1VD-FTE that had severe cold rattle and knock i was scared off the common rail engine completely. Even the nissans are crap. Good old technology...blending element of the past and the future to make something thats not as good as either???
Black mica 06 D4D GXL. , kitted out to take me where we need to go to feel free......

My 150 has done a trip to the Flinders, Oodnadatta Track, across the Simpson, and form Birdsville back through Innamincka and across from Tibooburra...3500Km...that was 2011. Last year we did Cape York, including the Old Tele Track (but NOT through Nolans Brook). This year we are saddling up for the Canning Stock Route, back to the Alice on the Tanami and then back hope to Queensland over the Plenty Highway.

So far never missed a beat, I have done a fair few mods, and it is maintained as per the book...it os however only a 2010 model so you'd expect no drama's this early in the piece.

          A capable off roader....you betchya

The only downside that I can see is we are wanting (after this trip) to move to an off road caravan, and the towing ability is limited...Kedron make one to suit the Prado as does Elite BUT it does fall short on towing capacity.

But you do gain on it being a lot more economical to run than a 200 Cruiser, however sadly you can't have your cake and eat it to!
150 Silver Diesel GXL Auto with ECB Bullbar, Toyota Factory towbar, Black Widow Drawer system with Fridge slide and cargo barrier, GME UHF 3340 Radio, Waeco 50 Litre Fridge, Rhino Racks and Rhino Basket, ARB Awning, IPF XS Spotties, ABR Sidewinder Dual Battery system,Airtec Snorkel, Bilstien Shockies, King Springs, Poly Airbags and BFG A/T''s. Now towing a semi offroad Lotus Freelander 18.6 Van, with all the bells and whistles.

Yep I agree, the reasons are obvious, more power and better economy!

Too right, its been 4 months since my last trip, getting itchy feet now. Pity its so F&*^%$G HOT at the moment, not much joy in a tent in this weather, although I had similar temps Last april going across the desert.

                Cheers Andrew

It's so hot the velcro holding my scanguage to the steering column shroud melted yesterday. I gotta go up to Warburton and whack some camels but the thought of picking up the hot brass from the ground puts me off.

Thanks bud appreciate it.... sounds like you've had some very enjoyable trips from the 150!

How many days did you take doing those? Trying to decide on a good 10 outback trip for Easter.

The past few days been extensively looking around at used vehicles is doing my head in!! I think its safe to say that i need to rule out a new vehicle and just bite the bullet on a second hand one considering they're so close to the new price. I feel like i'm rushing a bit but i need a vehicle ASAP.

So - GXL VS VX. 18" tyres turn me off, i think thats the real deal breaker, found a 2010 VX I am keen on for 53K, 65,000 kms, 2 mths rego but the dealer has taken it on holidays

2010 GXL same amount of kms for 50k (maybe less if i can), BFG AT's, 8 mths rego, otherwise stock and looks brand new. Fingers crossed the high kms aren't a big issue i don't think I should be too concerned... if i have to pay 5k down the track to get an overhaul so be it!

I found a 2010 150 GXL D4D Auto with 59,080 kms on it at my local Toyota dealer for you. Priced at $55,990 but does come with ARB bullbar, towbar, and a Safari snorkel already fitted. I'm not sure if this is a good price but seems OK considering the accessories. It looks to have HT type tyres on it but they aren't Grandcraps, seems odd to not have AT tyres with all that gear but hey it is Brighton LOL. Has almost 6mths rego but it is Vic so not sure what the go is with transferring to NSW.

                      Stock # is 36886

If you decide to contact them ask for Chris and tell him Corine (Silver Kakadu) sent you, bought the last 2 Prados from him.

Thanks for that, appreciate the help. that would have been OK if it was closer. It really helps when those few mods are done.

I went and looked at one today at a dealership close by.

40,000kms, Build Nov 2011, first registered 2012. Silver, immaculate, drives like new. 6 mths rego, tow bar, dash mat, floor mats etc..

got them down to $53,300 and they won't budge now. I think it's a good price?! Waiting for a call back to put a deposit down.

GXL or VX? That's a good price for one with low K's like that. Mine's an 09 but had only 43,000K on the clock. Paid $61K for it but it is a Kakadu and had the bullbar, towbar, and AT tyres on it so I thought that was a fair price. Good luck, looking foward to the build thread!

GXL turbo diesel. Just paid dsposit then.

Sounds like you scooped a good price too fido!

Will have the build thread soon. Already have a long mod list... oh dear haha!
