  • New Car Prices

Just an interesting observation that really annoyed me.

Because of a work situation I am trading my Prado for a new Landcruiser 200 series. (yeah, i know)

After speaking to most dealers in SA, they all told me that Toyota had told them they could not discount the new cars because they were popular and wanted to make some $$$.

That's all fair enough when they have such a great product in high demand but to me, all's fair in business and a customer should be able to shop around and negotiate accordingly.

It would be interesting to see what the ACCC have to say about this.

Has anyone come across this sort of attitude when purchasing a new Prado recently?

      run it like a tender

      Hey Richo,

      I'm droping trade secrets here.......

All dealers say they will not budge on new car price. This is BS. If you want to save some big $ make the dealers tender for your business. If you have a trade-in this can work even better.

You need to physically go to 5 or so dealers that are relatively close to you.

Ask for their best price and get them to write it down on a toyota logo piece of paper. Go to each dealer and do the same thing and use a previous quote to better the previous quote.

Once you have the lowest quote, play with the dealer as if you are ready to buy but just before you sign, ask for all the accesories you want and the others you wouldn't mind having. After they give you their "final" price pretend you are still very interested but walk away, telling them "I need to think about it". It is essential you physically leave the dealership so the sales rep and manager can talk. This is very effective if you do it saturday arvo, they will ring you at 9:01 monday morning.

The extras you added that you don't really care about now become a leverage tool in the bargaining process. But you have to pretend you still really want them and can't really live without them.

End of year, quarter and month quoters must be filled as with any sales positions so you will get your best deals at these times.

I have a just saved almost a 5 figure sum on a fully toyota accessorised prado.

There are numerous companies that will bargain a new car deal in this way but there is no such thing as a free lunch and they will normally take at least 50% of the savings as their cut. But they will tell you they don't charge you anything.

I hear what your saying 'Trojan' but price fixing is just that.
Fixing a price or discount. If the dealers get together to limit the discount from one independent business to another then they are 'fixing' the price.
I realise that they don't have to discount but isn't all dealers agreeing NOT to discount, fixing the price?

My local Toyota dealer told me they are not offering fleet pricing on the 200 series (and probably won't be for at least 12 months) - sounds a bit suss to me.

          Anyone able to confirm this?

Grandeman, that's rubbish. A mate of mine is a fleet manager and they are definitely doing a LOT of fleet deals.

All new car prices are setto increase in Queensland as of tomorrow!

Stamp duty will rise from 2% on all vehicles to 3% for four-cylinder vehicles, 3.5% for six- cylinder cars and 4% for V8s.

The duty on hybrids will remain at 2% to encourage motorists to drive the environmentally friendly cars.

It doesn't sound like a lot but it sure adds up in the end.

When I bought my D4D last year.....I was actually looking at the old model run outs, I went to my nearest dealer who offered me the old model at about $56k on road. I then went to the dealer I bought my wife's car from who had none of the run out models left, asked me if I could wait a few months (3-4 as it turned out) and offered me the D4D auto for $51K on road......and that was the starting point of our negotiations.....mind you it helps because I have my own business, so we get a business discount, and we can claim GST back as well, which makes a big saving on retail price. It pays to shop around, and be prepared to walk away if necessary.

New car vehicle tax in NSW...

Our new Prado (GXL 3.0L T Diesel Manual - Charcoal Grey) which arrives early January (Dealer Speak Translation:- Arrives in Australia on boat early January, arrives Coffs Harbour closer to Febuary  ), was going to cost us about $3,000 more in tax if we picked it up with all of the accessories on it (luxury car tax and sales tax on full transaction amount).

Simply by driving the vehicle back the next day and having the accessories fitted, we have saved enough to pay for a winch! (that's my justification to the other half) Well worth the frustration of taking it back the day after.

I'm sure there's more ...

                      Jim

Does that affect the warranty on your accessories?

I was told that it was only 12 months if they were fitted after delivery rather than 3 years if they were fitted before.

                        Hi Richo, Good point.

From the Toyota Genuine Accessories page on the Prado Brochure (and from the Toyota website):

"All Toyota Genuine Accessories purchased and fitted to a Toyota are warranted for the remainder of the New Vehicle Warranty or 12 months, whichever is greater. Toyota Genuine Accessories purchased from an authorised Toyota Dealer over the counter are warranted from the date of purchase for one year (unlimited kilometres). Conditions apply."

So, if I'm reading it correctly, if they (Toyota) fit the accessories then the accessories will be warranted for 3 years (less the time between new vehicle pick up and fitment). If I buy the accessories over the counter and I or someone else fits them then they are warranted for one year.

Off course it would be wise to double check with the dealership ... which I shall do. One of the reasons I'm going with the toyota accessories was the '3 year warranty' when fitted to new vehicles, which was on a poster at the dealership.

                        Cheers,
