Whilst diesel engines are definitely more efficient with fuel use, they do have other costs:
    - Their purchase price is higher.
    - Turbos cost more to maintain.
    - They tend to have higher KM's, leaving you with more repairs to spend money on.

If you keep getting burnt by past purchases then you're repeating a mistake. Try to find well looked after vehicles with legitimately low KM's. Don't get a high-km vehicle due to budget restraints - you'll just end up spending more money on maintenance.
Sorry mate but you are never going to find a 90 series with low K's they stopped making the thing almost 11 years ago now so at best you may get one with 150,000 on it but more like 250,000

"low" as in near 150k km... is still quite easy. Just change the timing belt and start enjoying a cheap/reliable 4wd

I disagree, mine sold late last year with only 100,026 KMs (plus whatever it clocked up while on the dealer's lot which was only 2 weeks).

We don't do a lot of KMs since we live in the inner burbs and close to public transport, it took us 10 years to do ~80,000 KMs. We were fortunate to buy one only 10 months old at the time and with relatively few KMs to begin with hence why our total after 10years was so low. Only reason we sold the 95 series was age, mechanically it was fine. My example might be the exception but look around on Carsales and I'm sure you will find others like it.

Yea we were the same, close to work for bother and the wife (8k) and I used her car on her days off so we sold our 01 grande turbo diesel with 107K on it in excellent condition. [IMG][/IMG]

Thanks guys. But the mrs (and myself like the shape of the 120 and the age factor.) we are going backwards in years and kms to get a car we want. Just got the news through that insurance are going to pay for the damage due to poor fuel/ containments. Phew!!! But this also means I now need to ask for the fuel system to be flushed as well. With all the work needing to be done we are nearing the cost of the car. Will they write it off if repair cost = value?

Anyway. We have found a 2005 grande with 170k kms. Full service history and a few extras. They want 22500 but its a family friend and are willing to sell to us for trade in like money $16500. Does that sound right?

If it,s all legit, properly serviced and in good nick, $16500 would be a great price for that year model and kays, check it right over and jump on it.

                      Cheers

Mate you would be mad not to jump at it for that price. Wow I'd hate to think what mine would be worth trade in now,,, very little by the sounds of it...... Check the sunroof for rust.... Cheers Steve

That's a great price for an 05 Grande which has the 5 speed auto. Like I said before, I know someone that bought an 04 Grande with the older 4 speed auto for $20K and that was a good buy.

It's a petrol. The other option is a 07 gxl d4d with 225k that has had the injectors, clutch and water pump done for $21500. I'm not sure it's worth the extra money. Going to keep the car for 5years+ so would recoupe money through fuel savings. We tow. Will def get mech inspection done before purchase. Just need to get it right. Diesels are giving me the sh*ts but they are better towers

Define better? More torque certainly, but i guarantee the petrol 4L v6 will overtake any diesel prado towing the same weight easily
, I towed a small van just under a tonne to NSW and back, didn,t notice it, sat on 110 easily, overtook easily, then towed my parents 2.5 tonne van for 400klms and did it with ease, The v6 is a seriously powerful motor, and known reliability, check around the forum and do a google search, the toyo diesels are not what they once were.,

                                Cheers
