  • Looking at a 120 GXL D4D

    Hi guys
New to this forum. Looking at getting a Prado to replace my Disco 2. We are looking for a newer and more reliable family 4wd.

At the moment we are looking at getting a late model 07-09 120 series. Haven't had a lot to do with prados before, but driven plenty of Hilux's, 76/79 series at work.

Is there anything I'd need to look at in a 120 series that's getting up to the 100,000km mark? I've found abit of info about replacing the injectors as a precaution.

Any ideas or info is greatly appreciated.

    Cheers

Nige there are a number of threads that you need to read if you haven't already. Go through the 120 diesel section and read up on the D4D. Very simply if the engine has had its injector seals changed at the 80,000km service when the valve clearance check was done then you wont have an issue with the oil pick up strainer blocking (one problem that can lead to engine failure) until the next time they get changed. Also get the injector feedback values checked regardless of whether the injectors have been replaced or not. If all is standard then you need to have the oil pick up strainer inspected for clogging and you are likely looking at new injectors in the next 20,000 to 30,000km if not before. Is it an automatic? Then also ask if it has been towing and whether the transmission fluid has been changed. It is a good idea to do that around every 50,000 to 60,000km depending on what it is towing. I haven't had a manual so cannot comment other than there have been posts about clutch problems. Read up the 120 section and arm yourself with the data. The usual checks on a used car are of course needed too. Full service history is a good start.

In my opinion if you want a diesel buy a pre 2006 120 with the 1kz (older diesel motor not the D4D). Cheaper to buy, cheaper to fix if something goes wrong & it is also much less likely for something to go wrong. Or buy a V6.

Thanks for the help guys, appreciate it.
I'll look into the D4D injector problem abit more, see what I can dig up.

Do you know of anyone who has bought on of the 150 GX ex mine vehicles? Obviously you'd have to go over it with a fine tooth comb and would probably take a few to find a good one.

Personally I would steer clear of ex mine vehicles, having said that most prados are used for the big wigs in the mines so "should" be better looked after... Should. I would never buy a hilux or cruiser if it was ex mining, ever
