  • New gxl or gx

    Hi all,

I intend buying a new prado this week and although I have been focussing on a gxl I am now wondering if I should save some $ and go for the GX. Basically I don't need the 7 seats and although I haven't seen a GX I am guessing there would be more room without the seats. The only other things I can see that would make a diff are the lack of side steps and roof rails, both of which I could add myself for about $1000 max. There is also the parking sensors, three zone climate control, privacy glass, but I can live without all of these.

Is there something I am missing?

I guess there might be a hit in resale down the track as well.

There seems to be about $5000 price difference rrp and while I already have the gxl down to $58000 saving $5000 would be nice.

    Any thoughts would be welcome.
    Cheers

Also don't get colour coded door handles and mirrors, no leather steering wheel or gear knob, not sure on steering wheel controls for the radio. We were toying with the same thing, but the missus really liked the climate control and the leather steering wheel is much nicer to drive with. Add that to the drop in resale and it kinda didn't make sense to save the dollars now.

Of those things it's probably just the sterling wheel that makes any difference to me. Still when you add it up you can see the extra value it just depends if it is extra value to me and that's what I have to comtemplate.

        Thanks for your input

There doesn't seem to be much between the GX and GXL in the facelift model. The pre facelift there was bigger differences like the audio and reverse camera. Best thing to do is get in both and drive both.
          Good luck!!

my vote is for the GX. Didn't want the 7 seats, roof rails, plastic steps. Only thing I miss is the steering wheel controls for teh radio, but dosen't really bother me. If you are impatiant and dont mind white, you could also likely find a GX in stock so you dont have to wait for it to be built & shipped, try the yards that do alot of fleet sales.

Seems like the difference in price is $3500. I reckon it will cost me About $1000 for roof bars and side steps. So the diff is down to $2500. That could get me a bull bar. Hmmmmmmmmmmm not sure still. Will be trying to do a deal tomorrow I'll see which way it goes.
              Thanks for your input everyone.

quigs, the 'leather' wheel and gear knob on the gxl is imitation rubbish so put sfa value on those things

gday quigs mate we went the GX and are quite happy with it but in saying we are not flash car people and we also have one small child with a view to more and figured that more gagets an and stuff is just more things to get broken. this was rammed home when some of our friends bought a 200 series gxl and their youngest went to town on the inside with a nikko pen. also we live on a farm and the dust is a constant pain in the butt. the only thing to watch is the wheel rims are 17x6.5 and ours has 245-70-17 on it and I don't know if you can put wider tyers on these rims. personly I like spending less for a base model and more on mods. cheers pradlux

I think the 2014 GX model now come standard with the larger 17x7 rim same as GXL, rear camera and audio controls etc on steering wheels.
For me you can't go past a GX, especially if you don,t need the 7 seater. Save the dollars and put them to the your extras.

I believe one of the biggest points is the resell value, there is always a huge gap between the GX and GLX on resale. I also know it's easier to sell a GXL than a GX.

I'm always surprised with the amount of differences in the GX and GXL that you don't notice until you hop in the other vehicle for a day or two

The GX now comes with 'normal' sized tyres too, 265/65R17.

Now that you can get the GXL under $60,000 it is not subject to Luxury Car Tax so the difference is closer to $3,000 than the $7,000 when I bought mine. Three years ago it was a no brainer, my GX fully equipped for touring and 4x4 for the same price as a stock GXL. Today I would go a GXL but then I would look for a GX wreck so I could get the trims out of the back. and I would also buy the dash bits to move the info screen down low and lift the radio/satnav where it can be seen better.

Is the storage system much easier to achieve with a GX (because there are no rear seats to remove) or is it a simple issue to pull out the rear seats?

I have wondered too about 3rd party suspensions ... when I replaced my suspension on my 90 the car (truck) handled better and rode much better (due to variable rate coils I presume). Are the current factory coils variable rate?

I have wondered too about a VX - does it need 3rd party suspension with its KDSS benefits? And does KDSS ride better than the standard suspension? I know it roles less in corners, but I've not driven one yet.
