  • Ex mine GX 150 series

Hello all, I've recently purchased an ex mine vehicle ex QLd. Pretty sharp price, sub 35k with lots of extras, but just seems to always create some additional issues when I want to add or change something. Vehicle drives well & internal & external is in good nick. Seems to be a lot of crap stuck in the chassis & the Local ARB mechanic suggests even if I can get all this crap out, might have some trouble with rust etc down the track. I'm sure there are others out there like me with a similar problem & I'm interested in your experiences. Mechanic says I should move it on ASAP, but even if I can will prob lead to a further haircut. Bought it with a 2 yr warranty which would cover any serious mechanical '& drivetrain issues. Don't really want to keep spending cash on it if it's really going to be an ongoing problem. I know I might get lots of responses but would really just like to hear from people with real ex mine vehicle experience & I do appreciate these vehicles will vary a fair bit.

I wouldn't buy one ex where I work in QLD.
We don't own them, so don't care, and our LV mechanic is as tired as they come. Things never fixed right or first time, fluids often less than full and still operated like they were stolen.
Suspension gets a hiding, and while springs/shocks are easily changed, every bush in the front and rear ends isn't.

I have worked on quite a few ex mining vehicles and they are the one vehicle I always tell clients to steer clear of. Broken bolts, seized bolts and rounded heads are common, corrosion damage is incredible on most of these vehicles. You can fix most things but once corrosion gets into the chassis that's the end of it. I dread doings clutches in particular, gearbox crossmember bolts always break.

I've owned a ex mine 120 series for a while now, what people above have said are correct. I personally have not had any issues as I looked into who was using the vehicle and I deduced it was the Electrical Engineering Manager. Find it's original Rego and look at it's service record, see where it's been serviced and then ring up the mines site security centre and they should be able to tell you who owned it.

Thanks dellarius, I have the last 5 services from the local Toyota dealership in emerald & nothing really of any major issue noted. Rang the dealer before I bought it to see if they could give me a name, but privacy laws was a problem. Had thought about ringing the mine direct to talk to the fleet manager & see if I could work out why was the main driver. Mine was crinum. I have washed all the crap out of the rails & cross members & seems pretty smooth inside, plan to let it dry & give it another crack in a few weeks & then I might pump some fish oil into the same, what's your thoughts on that? Have come across some corrosion in the electricals so far, but I've also been told to get a chip from arb which stems this, is that right do you know?

At least in Victoria under the Motor Car Trader's Act 1986 the dealer has to provide the name and address of the last registered owner on request if they have that info :-

Not sure what the rules are in Queensland though. My dealer tried the privacy BS when I bought the 95 series but one mention of the above and info was forthcoming. With the 150 the salesman made a point of showing me the service book which had the name of the company who owned it in there, after that a phone call and I had the info I wanted.
