  • Looking at buying a 07-09 Prado

Hi, I'm looking at buying a 07-09 Prado in the near future and just wondering if anyone can give me some advice on what problems I should look for? I have seen a few posts about injector problems and am a little concerned. Any help would be very much appreciated.
    Thanks in advance.

I am no expert, but from what I have read is this re injectors (I am only new to Prado's and mine is a 1KZ 120)

seats are crap and leak. When car sits for a while - say overnight, oil can leak into combustion chamber. In the morning you will get a plume of smoke at start-up. This is the oil burning and a first tell tale sign that you need to do something sooner than later.
The leak is a two way street. When running the combustion process pushes "crap" back into the oil system. The crap is then filtered out by the oil puck up strainer/filter so it does not go around the engine (as it should). The strainer/filter then gets blocked and all of a sudden as you are driving the engine will seize.

I believe that the D4D that was affected is of the age of the vehicle you are looking at - but I am good at being wrong.

I hope that was right and I am sure others will correct me if I am wrong.

    Good luck hunting

    Mick

If buying a D4D I highly recommend you allow a couple of grand in your budget to replace the injectors, especially if it has a few kms on it (150k+). Unless there is evidence that they've been recently done. And take the dealers warranty! It could save you a LOT of money if the worst happens (which it did to me, but silly me didn't take out the warranty because I thought the injectors were good).

Injectors are your only real concern in an otherwise fantastic car.

I have a 2007 D4D and had the injectors replaced out of warranty after the dreaded rattle.

The original injectors were the wrong type and since replacement no dramas, and as MRW82 says a fantastic car.

Check if they have been replaced or allow for replacement in any purchase price.

Injector issue only applies to the diesel D4D models. Not the earlier ones. Both petrol and diesels are good vehicles IMO. If you're not growing to tow, the petrol is a great unit. Us D4D owners just like living with a little but of uncertainty and fear in our lives.

But yes plan on injector replacement @120,000-150,000 as they are a consumable and wear out.

Symptoms of failed seals in the D4D are usually a rattle when cold and white smoke on startup. Try and get to see one early in the morning before they've had a chance to drive it and warm it up if you are worried.

Otherwise that era is the pick of the bunch in my very humble opinion.

Mate I just purchased an early registered 2009 D4D Grande. I researched the diesel/petrol idea, I listened (perhaps to much) to the discussion around these injectors etc.
I brought a D4D Diesel with 161K's on the clock, never been off road. I had the injectors checked out by dealer I brought the car from (made sure I got three year dealer warranty) then had Toyota check them out (as I found out the 150K service is a full strip down and replacement of seals etc.)
They gave me the readings, took photos of what they had done and seen, then told me the injectors were in good nick and ready for another 100K plus with another replacement in 75K to 100K (depending on usage). It cost $480 as I had already replaced ALL my oils at another Toyota dealer (usual service $780) just after buying to ensure that I had good oil in the car (and not rely on that they had been replaced in the service period??).

My truth is I got very rattled by all this talk around replacement $4K plus costs engine blowing up etc. that I wanted to know - spoke with Baileys Diesel service and then to a Toyata dealer on the Gold Coast who openly told me the D4D motor is reliable and will give you years of service IF you service them every 7500 to max 10K k's. and that ONLY since 2007 have the brought in replacement of seals etc. in the 150K service.

So there ya go... I am now driving a reliable, powerful diesel D4D and IF something now goes wrong then I have the proof of service and warranty to protect at least the majority of costs... and I believe I have mitigated most of the reasons for that to happen!
Hope this helps as I too was spooked by the stories - my advice is take your time, find a good ca,r then get the Injector readings from a reliable independent operator. Then go and have some fun as the 120 is one great car -
