  • Bargain? - 2009 KDJ120R manual

    Hi all,

I'm new here. I used to own an 80 series Cruiser so I'm not new to 4WDs, but I don't know a great deal about Prados (although I have done a small amount of research) so I'm looking for opinions of people in the know.

I've just seen a stock 2009 KDJ120R manual at a dealer with around 255,000kms for low $20,000s. Vehicle is from somewhere in central western NSW. Don't know much else about it. Does it sound like a good price? Most other post-upgrade 120 Prados I've seen are advertised for much more.

    Cheers,
    Travis

Ditto. Not sure what scam could be played here. Understand if it was a gumtree ad or similar, but I saw this vehicle in the flesh at the dealer.

Which model? Standard, GX, GXL? It has very high kms. You'll need to determine how much hard work it has done at mine sites, etc.

That's very high km's for 2009. Our's is 2007 and has 196000 and even that's high for its age.
2007 GXL V6 - ARB Bullbar with LED lights, snorkel, extractors, 2 1/4" dual exhaust, K&N filter, dimpled/slotted rotors, headrest dvd players, Ebay Satnav/reverse camera, GME 3100TX, Tigerz11 Side awning on custom brackets with Maxtrax mounts, 300W Invertor, ARB Underbody protection, Lightbar and STZ 265/70 tyres.
Wish list in order I'll get them: Sliders, 2" lift, E-locker, Winch bar with winch.

I agree with biLLzOr, that's very high km's. Mines nov 2004 and it's just clocked 180000kms. I'd steer clear of it.

The road less travelled is definitely the best road to be on

Well - not really - there are a few 2008's sitting around the mid $20's but guessing they are ex mines as they are Standard/GX's? There's not much difference between Dec 2008 and Jan 2009...

It is high km's though. You could get a lower km 2008 for the same money.

IMO Ex mine prado's are not that bad, They mostly (not all) are used to cruise between towns and around the site by supervisors and the like they get serviced on time. The red dust is just dust and if your going to use it as a 4x4 then your going to end up with dust anyways......... I have a 2003 v6 prado with 267k on the clock I've had it 14 months and put 20k on it so far, don't the savannah way and it has run like a dream. Mine came from a mine site in wa and i expect many more ams out of it..... I service it every 5000...... I have worked on mine sites and the cars are fairly well looked after (not all) but mostly they are treated well as the rules and regs on site will see guys lose jobs if found treating equipment badly. Just my thoughts I'm sure there are heaps of crap mine prados but I'm sure theres just as many ones in the private market that have hidden problems....... Like any car get it looked over by a qualified mechanic should only cost a couple $$ then you will know!

I guess the discussion so far leads me to two questions:

                      1. It's not a GX (I think it is a GXL). Do they use models other than GX in the mines? Secondly, it's from central NSW, not sure how many mine vehicles come from that region as I don't know how much mining activity takes place around there. I've been told it is a country vehicle owned by a farm, so the high kms might just be long country distances. I saw it before the dealer started cleaning it up for display on his lot, so it was dirty but more like the kind of dirt after a bit of bush camping, not red dust or similar.

                      2. A few people are saying the kms are very high. My 4.2L 1HZ was considered 'run in' at 200k-odd, and have a life in excess of 500k, so I wouldn't think twice about picking up a Cruiser with this many kms. I know it's speculation, but what do people think the life of the D4D motor is?

                      Thanks for all input.

Get a mechanic to check it over mate, might cost you $150 but at least you will know...... Could it be a repaired right off? Think they stopped giving the option to buy back repairable right off's a couple of years ago though but that would make sense if i was....... just a thought.

I'd be checking all the numbers match, especially on a 1KD.

If it's had a engine failure and a second hand wreakers engine, with un-known KM's has been put in then there goes the value, same if it's a repaired write off; Then they're just parts buckets.

Redbook have them from 31k to 35k private sale and 26k to 30k as a trade with average Klm's 80000 -135000, so this is way above average i guess. Sometimes it's just market forces, a country dealer needs to move it and will just get what he can especially if it's sat in the yard for a while. As the guys say, get a mechanic to check it out and do a PPSR (formerly REVS) check on it and that will tell you the history.
