  • Having extremly difficult time choosing 120 or 150

EDIT: Were there any changes in 120 Grande from 03-09 in the petrol version? Any model to stay clear of? The missus wants the Grande now lol

    Hello all,

Having extremly difficult time choosing between a 150 or 120. I have a budget of 30k for a 150, however im not willing to pay this for a 120. This leaves me with cars with around 140k + kms, steering well clear of the mining cars from WA. By history of Toyota, this doesnt sound to bad.

I have great concern of the injector issues with the D4D's. Its not the 1k to replace the injectors, its the horror stories ive read where its costing the owners 10-25k to fix.

The only thing I could think of is a dealer offering an extended warranty, even then im not sure if the injectors will be covered.

I was dead set on Friday night about a 150 but now arrgh

I would go for it, if you like the vehicle and maintain it well it'll all be good. Get the injectors checked by a good mechanic you can trust and express your concerns, I'm sure you'll find a little guy to look after you and you'll love either car, just remember the 150 is newer, and newer is better

      First world problems, eh?

I doubt a dealer warranty will cover you for injector based detonation unless its specifically written into the contract or they are particularly benevolent. Dealer warranties are there to lock you into a service contract.

You could always get a 120 and have the injectors replaced, for peace of mind. If the 140k kms you mentioned bothers you, buy a 150 and be done with it.

      Caveat emptor and all that.

Thx for the fast reply guys.

Whats the price associated to replace the injectors? Is there a better aftermarket option?

I did exactly the same... then decided on the 2008/9 120. I am so pleased I did - Found a Grande 12/08 been a shopping trolley - no extras and no 4x4ing - 160K on the clock fully serviced - paid 36K plus a dealer warranty - I am soooo happy I did.
Got injectors checked all under 0.2 and motor in good nick... and I like the shape of the 120 compared to the 150's
Methinks it is just looking for the right car... since tricked it up (or in the process of) and putting on it what I want!!
              Hope this helps a little

Thx YMUS, could you elaborate on the dealer warranty please.

FYI-Brought from a dealer have a warranty that cost $1400 for three years and can claim up to $3000/claim. It ain't much but it is some reassurance.
I took my "new" 120 to a Toyota dealer here on the Gold Coast when I brought it got them to change ALL oils... they didn't give me much reassurance re service etc.
Two weeks later I walked into Hinterland Toyota spoke to the service manager and spoke pretty directly of the bad reputation dealers have on the forum AND how concerned I was re the reliability of the D4D motor etc. and how dissapointed I was with the other dealer.
He asked if he could offer to change those views and stated that the later 2007/8+ 120 was a "better" motor and he said IF you service them they will be VERY reliable.
I got them to do my 160K service after checking with the previous owners service peeps, they hadn't done it as per the service book!.
They (Hinterland) did the 160K service which requires the injectors removed cleaned serviced etc. They also tested the Injectors and gave me a report stating my engine was in excellent condition.
So I am going to use them until they do something that will persuade me not too.

Find a nice car, let go of the paranoia on this list re these motors... IF you do your homework, investigate each car that comes into your radar sites, (I stuck with dealer cars), CHECK out the car/service history/off road history, and you should be OK.

Baileys Diesel have a new type of Injector that assures a greater degree of reliability IF you are unsure!... and my limited knowledge is they don't go suddenly! - speak to Baileys they are VERY obliging peeps!

Robbo just take your time and choose carefully. You will probably find an ex shopping trolley in real good nick. You might just need to be patient. We got an 04 120 late last year with only 121000 on the clock. Was a farmers town car in superb nick for it's age and happy with the fact it's the old motor not the d4d.
After the trade in of our old car it only cost 24k too

A petrol 150 is a little cheaper and has no known issues. I think a lot of Prado owners often forget that the reputation of the Prado in both the 90 series and 120 series were based mainly on the Petrol engine.

I am part way though a trip part way around Australia towing a 21 foot caravan. I will let you know in 3 months what I think but so far very happy with my choice.

Nice choice to have! So I take it you are after a diesel? So much depends on your circumstance. Personally I would go latest, low mileage I could. That said, I picked my 120 GXL early last year with 80k on the clock, private sale. Price was good, and it came with a bullbar and a dual battery system and extra rear power sockets which is all I really wanted. Local Dealer had a grande with 180k for an extra $10k. And all the 150's were all higher k and higher price.

It only does about 20-30k a year, so even if we keep it 10yrs it should still be in reasonable nick. I kind of regret not getting a later model as in missing out on some drivers aids eg Traction Control. But I like the idea of a physical H/L lever and not a switch, and I don't really need the other bells and whistles from the 150. Less to go wrong IMO, and I prefer the shape of the 120. Apart from the electronic doo dads and a front mounted inter cooler I don't think I missed out too much.

It's a D4D so I do have a nagging feeling in the back of my head but I keep an eye on it. The cost of replacement may seem high but any car has expenses. Spread over 8-10 yrs is not bad. I had an xtrail that went through two clutches and a set of front bearings and was towed after a failed oxygen sensor shut it down 350km from home. All in 5 years. Which cost way more than replacement injectors

Insist on getting injector feedback values checked as part of the pre purchase inspection.
