  • Buying a Prado. Injector issues sorted????

    Hi there guys.

Looking at buying either 2010 GLX D4D Auto or a 2012 GL D4D manual. Not sure which yet but that depends on $$!

    I have 3 questions:

1/ Whats the best way to tell if the injectors are OK without computer? Noisy at cold start is hard to pick when you have nothing to reference it to. Most Diesels are noisy at start up so how much is acceptable? Are there any other tell tale signs?

2/ Have the injector issues been fixed on the 150 series Prados? Has the injectors been fixed and has the injector related dirty oil pick up issue been fixed?

3/ Does the Prado have a DPF and if so what are the related issues? Cost, servicing any other issues? Are you guys blocking off your EGR valves with success? I see you guys use Provent filters with good success too?

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

How long should injectors last? 100,000Ks?

Matt you really need to search the 150 diesel section because there are pages of data there you need to get your head around. Then ask for clarification if you have more questions. However I will offer the following:

      1) noisy at start up is one common issue when the engine and ambient is cold. So is blowing white smoke until the engine is up to temperature. Common but not 100% so feedback values from a Techtool or equivalent is the only sure fire method.
      2) no and maybe. A sponsor here has a remanufactured and in my opinion improved injector. According to some reports early 150s still had the old injector seats (sheets). There is also not enough evidence to say the new style are 100% bullet proof. Injectors should be pulled when valve clearances are checked every 40,000km and the seats changed but usually this isn't done unless requested and pushed when you book the car in.
      3) no DPF. Do not block the EGR it will throw computer codes because the EGR is not just a simple valve on the. D4D. Just use a catch can and be careful while the M+H Provent cans are proven and good there are a number of cheapness on evilbay where the description says Provent style or similar. These copies cannot use genuine filters. I know I have a virgin one sitting in its box at home. Buy the genuine articles as I have done.

Seriously there are many pages to read which detail these issues and explain better than I can.

I would think injectors should last 120,000 km but there are many variables such as fuel cleanliness. Check the feedback readings regularly and you can watch how they are going. I just bought a cable to do this myself. Cheap and easy. And there is a thread on this too!

        Thanks MJrandom.
I have tried looking for this stuff but with over 150 odd pages on the injectors/noisy idle alone it gets a bit too much!
Tried skimming it but its just too full on to miss a page here and there.
        Appreciate the summary

just bought a 2012 GX D4D sounds great no smoke 40K travelled early days I suppose.
AUS Diesel is questionable to say the least.
I had problems with Mitsi ute 5 years ago Bad diesel !!
If you have a diesel here make sure what goes in the tank is GOOD
          Not the same everywhere
