  • Selling a Jeep & Buying a 150 Prado

    Hey fellas,

New to the whole Toyota / Prado thing, but have finally come to the conclusion that I need to come to the dark side and sell the Jeep and get myself a 150.

Been looking at around the $50K mark and there are a few 2011-12 GXL prados for sale in Perth, with roughly 60,000 kms on the clock.

My questions are - If you were to buy an older GXL (2011-12) or a new facelifted GX which would you prefer and why, keeping in mind the budjet i have of 50K?

Do the prados have injector issues like the hiluxs or is this a bit of a myth?

Also, I have seen some good deals at the auto auctions with low km 150s, has anyone purchased one here in Perth and have you had any issues?

Very new to the diesel 4wd market and never had a Toyota before, pretty excited to go and start looking in the next couple of weeks.

    Cheers in advance.

Dark side? Ha ha ha oh you poor misguided Jeep owner 😜
Welcome, you'll like it here. Most of the okra are nice. Just watch out for that BlakMoth fella. He might hit on you haha
And yes they do have the same issues as the Hilux engine wise. Do your research and then enjoy the purchase. 👍

If your budget is only $50k then the best value would be 2013 GX (facelift model)
In Brisbane I could have brought a brand new 2013 GX for $53k drive away.
So you should be able to get a 2013 GX with about 20,000Klms for under $50k and still have two years factory warranty left.

The facelift GX has most of the features of the 2011 GXL including rear camera and 265 wide tyres.
The only thing you miss out on from the GXL is the climate control A/C and factory window tinting.
Roof rails & side steps can be purchased cheaply second hand if you want them.

So you also get more cargo space in the GX without the 3rd row of seats.

Agree with redsand. The engine problems are better than the early 120's and hilux's, they are really limited to injector wear, depending on fuel they come up anywhere from 120,000 and can last alot longer if you get lucky. All in all they are a great engine, all CRD engines are having injector related problems at the moment, and many others are having other issues.

Drive a facelift GX and see what you think, I think they are good value for money and a great choice. You do also miss out on the leather wrapped steering wheel and gear knob, little things i know but they are important to some.

Enjoy the enlightened feeling of owning a Toyota

Facelift GX has a lot more standard features as red sand said, we bought ours new for $53,900 drive away. You should get a very low km maybe even MY14 model for your $50,000 budget.

Awesome guys thanks heaps for the heads up. Always wanted a toyota and i dont think you can beat the prados so very excited.

The main reason i wasnt keen on the GX is because i have been looking at pre 2012 models. Sounds like the facelift GX models have got a lot of the mod cons that they share with the older gxls. Im not fussed if i get the side steps and other tack on bits as ill be looking at proper sliders eventually.

Will let you know how i go, now just gotta sell the heep...i mean jeep

              Hey Emil,
I myself live in Perth and I have just bought a 150 GXL facelift prado, still waiting for ARB to finish all my work on it. I have been driving a toyota van for awhile with the turbo D4D motor just clocked 180,000 has not missed a beat!!!!! and it goes strong you will not be disappointed...

Pluss I work for Toyota the Prados are on special at the moment there is some nagoya cars still around about 5,000 dollars cheaper cause they where damaged in the volcanic ash! but there damage you can not even see... good luck and you will enjoy it here..
