It felt to me like the auto was trying to hold too higher a gear and that the D4D was "chugging" like a tractor at 1500 rpm.
It felt like it needed to kick down and do the job at 1800 rpm instead.
I was a little disappointed. The drone/chug wasn't befitting of a $60k toyota built in 2014. I found myself wishing for my 4speed 1kz at times.
Good news is that I only had the issue for a couple of months. Now I don't notice it at all. I don't know what changes, perhaps the motor loosens or the auto adapts, or perhaps it takes a while for the motor to learn how awesome (not) Australian diesel is? I have no idea - but mine was fixed with time/Kms.
Now I am super happy with my donk/auto combination and all the noises that it makes
