  • New 150 GXL

    Hi
We've been borrowing my dad's Prado for a while when needed but it's coming to the point where we need to get our own.

Toyota currently have the GXL diesel auto on "special" for $61990 drive away - see here. Is that a good deal?

I've been looking at second hand prices for a while and the asking prices seem pretty high for a reasonably new car. I realise that you don't always get what you ask for but it seems that saving a few thousand dollars for to get a car with 20k on the clock isn't a great deal.

Is there much room for haggling with a special like that? We need a towbar and rubber floor mats - are we better off trying to get them included or go aftermarket?

I had my heart set on a VX initially -mainly because of the KDSS which looks good - but there don't seem to be many deals on them going around and I can't see that KDSS is worth $15k or more that the VX seems to cost. We've always had manuals in the past but it looks like the GXL manual isn't on special - so I'm not sure I want to pay a few thousand extra for one.

If we do get a new one, how soon can you tow a Tvan camper trailer? Do you need to wait till it's run in or could it cope with the drive to Melbourne on the Hume Highway from almost new?

Personally I'd wait till after xmas as it will then be technically a year old so they will be getting rid of 2014 stock so I reckon you will do better then 60k with some extras. As far as towing goes just hook it up and go for it. Days of running as it was once called have sort of disappeared. As long as you don't rev the crapper out of it and fluctuate the speeds a tad then don't see any issues. Our friends bought the D4D and hooked up a 20 footer behind it and hit the road from new, never had any issues....I'm sure if I'm incorrect about the towing side of it some one will let you know.....cheers Steve

the manual recommends 800km before towing.
So just a couple of weeks running around before towing is what i did.

So... just got called back by a Sydney dealer I spoke with a week or two ago, chasing up leads that the sales guy who has "moved on" had left.

Apparently prices are going up 3% next year but also Toyota is scrapping some sort of rebate thingy that the dealers get so they won't be able to discount as much.

They couldn't remember the last time they sold a GXL manual so it would take 3-4 months to get one. They can do a white GXL diesel auto for $60800 driveaway. The VX would be $75200 - as much as I'd love KDSS I don't think it's worth $15k!

A Toyota towbar is $1021.70 + stamp duty so I don't think I'll be ticking that box...

I got mine ordered early November last year, and got it for $60k drive away with rubber floor mats and a cargo mat. My beast is a manual and Peter is right, I had to wait four months for my one. They said that it was the first 2014 Ebony manual GXL in OZ... so they say!

Don't get Toyota accessories because they are over priced, stick with the aftermarket parts/accessories.

You can tow with any vehicle (with a tow bar) straight out of the showroom floor, vehicle manuals are only recommendations. That said, I wouldn't tow a Winnebago Minnie 2 berth caravan with a Holden Barina. All towing capable vehicles now days goes through rigorous testing before they are release out to the automobile industry. Tvan is rated one of the lightest camper trailer on the market, approximately 1 tonne.

I wouldn't buy the "prices going up 3%" line. Toyota just increased prices with the face lift, and with Jeep and Pajero biting into the "4wd" market, I really cannot see how Toyota would be crazy enough to increase again.

I bought the VX for the KDSS, look for a demo model, search and ring, they are out there. If you are not trading in, then search other states. I looked for 8 weeks before I found mine with 2700km on the clock, bullbar, mats, tinted windows for $70K. Take away the trade-in price and it was an absolute bargin. A salesman was trying to sell me up to a Kakka, after I rang up to see if they had a VX, I went along to kill some time. Because the business manager over heard me stating I was only interested in a VX he came over to introduce himself, he knew their other dealership a few suburbs away had a manager driving around in one... it became mine within minutes with the 2 dealerships fighting over where the sale should be allocated to and the sales person being berated for "not knowing their stock sheets".

VX only comes in auto. As for buying a manual, think about resale down the track. With my 120 being manual and all the "soccer mums" out there, it was raised as an issue on resale constantly with all dealers I spoke to.

With what ever model you buy, its a Toyota and you will be happy. I personally believe the KDSS is worth the extra money, but remember the government has it hand in there with the luxury tax.

Don't look at me, I'm Gen X, we are stuck in the middle of all this....

I got my 2014 white auto GXL 6 weeks ago now for below $60k with a $15k deposit - cash is a lot more liquid for them than a trade in so play on that. I wasn't sold on the KDSS, in my opinion $15k can go along way (or not) on accessories. I was lucky to get a GXL on a vessel that no one had laid claim, so might be worth the ring around and check who has what in or coming in to stock. Also, they have margin on everything, and losing the margin on accessories is cheaper than losing a car sale - and interest on the finance if you go that way. After reading posts on here I bought "Prado 150 3D mats" off ebay for ~$250 (boot, second + third row and front foot wells) and don't smell like the rubber Toyota ones.

              Good Luck!

Wel I've got a completly different story as per the manual argument. I went into our dealer of choice (knew the salesman so no bartering/bantering over price), we said manual, he said what colour, we said what have you got. He checked stock and had a graphite and a white in stock ready to go. Missus said I would really like a silver, I said don't be silly, I like the white. Salesman said he will trade out the graphite for a silver one, he'll ring us back that arvo and let us know when it was going to be there. It was ready for pick up about 10 days later.

Someone will have what you want around, and if you want a manual, get one, enjoy it, and sell it when it comes time. Tell them there is no way you are paying over $60k for a manual one, the auto would have to be at least a $2k option. I know this price isn't unreasonable, they will protest and tell you it is, but I had change from $60k, enough to pay retail for supply and fit of the towbar.

same. I ordered my facelift graphite GXL manual almost a year to the day at a major Sydney Toyota dealership. They found my exact spec just trucked to a dealer on the south coast to which they secured it for me (apparently swapped an 86 in their stock). I picked it up on xmas eve sans some ARB kit ordered, but stoked to have it nonetheless.

The first sales guy I was dealing with said similar things about the scarcity of manuals, no one's buying them, resale blah blah blah. When i told him it was a fleet purchase I was put on to the fleet guy 5mins later who said no worries and found one for me while I sat at his desk. If you're going to properly set-up your Prado it's unlikely soccer moms will be a buyer when it comes time to sell. With three pedals becoming rarer there should always be strong demand in the second hand market, so i wouldn't worry about resale at all

Nice Christmas present there but having rego due on the 24th sucks (been there with the previous Prado).

We picked up our white GXL auto diesel on Friday. $62750 including towbar & 3 year factory warranty/6yrs roadside assistance.

At the moment my wife is struggling to put MSA seat covers on and I'm scratching my head trying to work out why the second battery hits the A/C pipe with the ARB battery tray when everyone else's seems to be ok...

mmm, is it the battery itself hitting the AC pipe or the actual battery tray?

either way, be very careful moving with the AC pipe. We moved mine across ever so carefully. Then an AC technician undid the little braket on the pipe to connect it to the battery tray and in doing so undid a nut, thinking it was just a bracket bolt, but there is an AC pipe join with O ring under the braket... and AC gas sprayed into his face, and the o ring and gas had to be replaced, thankfully the AC pipe itself didn't break....and his eyes survived...I'm not sure that ėveryone elses seem to be ok", from what I recall from older posts, there were a few of us who did in fact move the ac pipe slightly towards the engine to fit in a second battery... ever so carefully, ....it may be that your second battery is a bit longer than the other batteries also...good luck!
